Reading

In term 2, students will be reading different fairytales through the progression of the term. Students will be asked to use their prior knowledge to re-tell or sequence a book in order of beginning, middle and end. Students will be working on their prediction skills, using the “I predict” statement to state what they believe will happen next in the story they are reading.  The second half of the term will see preps focus on the non fiction topic of “Helping hands: Emergency people” which links to our inquiry focus for the term. It is expected that prep students continue filling in their take-home readers with the help of their parent or carer, reading three skill-based texts and two free choice texts that they have chosen with the help of their home room teacher. It’s looking like a fantastic term in reading for our prep students!

Writing

During term 2 in writing, prep students will continue their focus on fairy tales, by responding to the focus fairytale for that week. Some of these texts include, three little pigs, billy goats gruff and goldilocks and the three bears. Students will be provided with a modelled sentence about the text, in which they will use this modelled sentence to respond to the text. Students will continue their focus on the fundamentals of handwriting, like holding their pencil correctly, using capital letters for names and at the beginning of sentences and finally writing left to right and starting from the top of the page. This will be a focus during whole class work and also in our recently commenced small writing group’s. It's shaping to be an exciting term in writing for the prep cohort!

Mathematics

In mathematics, students will commence the term focusing firstly on comparing collections of objects from the numbers zero-ten. We will be looking at this for the first three weeks of term. During that time, we will also be focusing on the units of measurement (Length and Height) and Using mathematical language such as longer or shorter to describe the length and height of something. After this we will shift our focus to ordinal numbers, connecting ordinal names (First, second, third) to numerical representations (1st, 2nd, 3rd) We will also be learning about 2D shapes and the features each of these shapes have. Counting beyond 20 will be one of our final mathematical units of the term, where we practice counting to 20 forwards and backwards and also being able to represent these numbers using hands-on materials. Lastly, we will finish off the term with our Data unit. This involves the students asking questions about familiar topics that only have two outcomes, such as yes/no or chocolate/vanilla.

Inquiry

For inquiry, we will be learning about different members of the community. Students will focus on members such as police officers, paramedics, and fire officers. We will look at what these members of the community do and how they contribute positively to our local community. As stated above, students will also be learning about these members of the community during our reading and writing sessions, so students will be able to bring the knowledge they have learnt in inquiry into the different facets of their learning. For our social and emotional studies, we will be firstly revisiting the expected routines and expectations that we created at the beginning of the year. We will also revisit our classroom agreement and the expected behaviours we have in prep. We will then move onto another of our respectful relationships units “Problem solving” This will look at conflict resolution and strategies students can use inside and outside of the classroom. The final social and emotional topic we are focusing on this term is “Positive coping” This will involve us continuing to identify emotions in the multiple forms they come in, as well as how we can manage these emotions in a positive manner. It will be a busy but enjoyable term in the inquiry space for our prep learners!

Science

Welcome to Term 2 Science! This term we are focusing on the Earth and Space Science strand by investigating the weather in our world.

Students will investigate different weather conditions and learn to describe common weather events.  Students will explore weather symbols used in weather reports through observing and creating their own.  There will be a focus on the four seasons and which type of weather occurs in each along with identifying appropriate clothing for each of the seasons. Students will have opportunities to spend time outside observing the weather, making predictions and recording observations.

In addition, the students will complete the practical as well for the weather, which will be super exciting for them.

It’s going to be a very busy yet entertaining term for the Preps!

LOTE - AUSLAN

Welcome to Auslan Term 2! During this term, Grade Prep students will learn about:

Deaf Culture, Feelings, Greeting and Questions and Around the House. They will learn

about Sea Animals, Days of the Week and Months of the Year, Numbers 1-20 (using

their dominant/writing hand) and Weather. The final week will focus on revision and

celebrating our learning. The Auslan signs for these topics are core learning, which will

be extended in future Auslan learning. Lessons will consist of explicit teaching through videos, supported by activities, games, stories, songs, poems and group practice.

Learning Auslan will involve both expressive (signing) and receptive understanding skills

(reading back what others’ sign), hence lesson activities will continue to develop these

skills. At this level, the students will mainly work in the whole group, managed by the

teacher and are provided with the opportunity to reflect on their learning together.

Art

Welcome to Term 2 Art! This term the Preps will revise the routines and expectations in our Art room environment, including correct use of tools and materials. They will revisit and consolidate their knowledge of colour theory from Term 1 and this will be incorporated into activities. They will also begin to learn about the Art element of line. This will include directed drawing and identifying and naming different lines e.g. horizontal or vertical. Students will explore how to form different types of lines (straight, wavy, curly, zigzag and spiral) and how these can be used to create shapes. Preps will use a variety of lines to create their own artworks. The mediums they will use include oil pastels, charcoal, paints and chalks.

With lots of exploring and fun to be had, we look forward to creating fabulous works of art this term!

P.E

This term, our Prep students will continue to build on their fundamental movement skills, focusing on throwing, catching, running, jumping, skipping, and kicking. These skills are the foundation for many physical activities and are an important part of early physical development. In addition to skill-building, students will be introduced to a variety of class games such as Tag, Hopscotch, Feed the Frogs, and Spud. These games are designed to be fun and active, while also promoting important social skills like teamwork, fair play, and learning to follow rules. Students will also begin working more with their peers, practising basic problem-solving, and learning how to cooperate during physical activities. I'm excited to support their growth and look forward to an energetic and enjoyable Term 2 in Prep PE.
