Chinese National Day and Reading Competition

On 24 April 2025, four students—Ryan, Sophia, Saya, and Breah—represented our school at the Chinese National Day and Chinese Reading Competition at Camberwell Grammar School. It was a fantastic day, filled with cultural learning and competition.

I am incredibly proud of all four students for their outstanding performance in Chinese and their excellent demonstration of our school values. Special congratulations go to Ryan and Sophia, who achieved 3rd place and the Excellence Award among 23 participating schools!

Their dedication and hard work truly shone, and they have set a great example for Chinese learning.

Student Reports

“On 24 April 2025, we were grateful for the opportunity to represent East Doncaster Secondary College at the Chinese Language and Culture Day at Camberwell Grammar School. The experience was a valuable chance to learn about various aspects of traditional Chinese culture through a range of interactive workshops.

We took part in activities such as the Chinese tea ceremony, papercutting, calligraphy and painting, dragon exercises, shuttlecock kicking, traditional Chinese costume, and Chinese knotting. All of the workshops provided valuable insight into China’s cultural and artistic traditions.

During the latter half of the day, we participated in the Chinese Reading Competition, which was organized for Year 8 and Year 9 students and open to those from non-Chinese backgrounds. This experience gave us the chance to practise our Mandarin reading skills in a supportive and encouraging setting.

Overall, the day was both enjoyable and informative, and we were honored to represent EDSC in such a culturally enriching experience.”

“Joining the Chinese reading competition was exciting and challenging. Reading in front of everyone was nerve-racking, but I enjoyed the cultural activities, and it was a great way to learn and have fun at the same time.”

“I had a truly joyous experience at the 2025 Chinese Reading Competition. Before the event, we participated in several workshops for Chinese Language Day, such as practicing Chinese calligraphy, kicking jianzi, solving Chinese puzzles, and learning about Chinese tea. It was a delightful experience in the prestigious Camberwell Grammar School.

However, when it was time for the competition, my mind was focused and alert. I reflected on my practice and efforts in Chinese class, preparing myself to perform well and hopefully win the competition. After giving my best effort during my speech and concentrating on perfecting my tones, I achieved a solid result, securing 3rd place—matching my placement from the previous year.

A warm smile spread across my face in satisfaction with my result. The pristine, laser-engraved glass prize glimmered in the sunlight streaming through the open windows of Camberwell's presentation room. As I gazed at the vibrant, royal red hue of the carpet and shook hands with the judges, I knew I had experienced something I would remember for a lifetime.”
