Year 3

Now that the Year 3's have settled into their new learning spaces for 2025, we have returned from the Easter break hitting the ground running with learning.
Term 2 English:
Year 3 have started their Literacy Appreciation novel called ‘The Nothing To See Here Hotel’. As the teacher reads, students have been able to apply reading strategies such as predicting, wondering, making connections and recording their thoughts and ideas in their Literacy Appreciation book. This magical and mythical book has us all gripped in cliff-hangers and the possibility of what the Goblin Prince could be up to when he finally checks into the hotel. Stay tuned for more …
As for writing we have begun a Persuasive writing unit where students are building on their strategies for up levelling their persuasive arguments using a range of high modality words and rhetorical questions.
Term 2 Maths:
We have started to spend some good TIME on Term 2s Maths focus on TIME (ha ha). Students have been recalling and recognising the numerous ways to measure time (seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years etc) and focusing on telling the time to the minute on an analogue clock. We have made block clocks and created and labelled paper clocks to consolidate our learning. Reading analogue time can be a tricky concept, so if you are wanting to help, you could incidentally refer to the time when you are home eg. 'In 5 minutes it will be 8am, that is when we are leaving the house' or 'When the minute hand is on the three that is quarter past 7, which is breakfast time.' This can be a great way for students to practise their skills at home.
The remainder of the term will be focused on a range of measurement skills (length, capacity, mass etc) and relating these to the world around us. Watch out for a note to come home soon about collecting recyclables that have capacity and or mass measurements written on them. We will be able to use them in the classroom to extend upon our learning.
Term 2 Integrated Unit:
Our Geography based Integrated theme for Term 2 is 'Australia! You’re standing on it!' Students have so far looked at the location of the states, capital cities, population, famous landmarks both natural and man made, the vegetation of Australia and we have made our own Australian jigsaws. Keep a lookout for these pieces at the up and coming Open Night.
Students are super excited about visiting Melbourne's famous landmark - The MCG on Wednesday 18th June. If you haven’t yet paid or consented, please do so on compass when you are able. It’s a fabulous day spent in the city.
