In last week's Especean, the SPeeCh! Core Assessment Task was outlined. Below we hear from students regarding their chosen topics and what they have discovered so far as part of their research:
Year 5
‘The Power of Nature’ is my chosen topic and I have started to explore how we can stop pollution, cutting down trees and protect animals. (Ryan J – 5 Blue)
I have chosen the topic of ‘The Power of Teamwork’. So far as part of my research I have discovered that working as a team reduces stress and it also reduces burn out by spreading the workload. (Jonathan R – 5 Blue)
I have chosen to explore ‘The Power of Nature’ and looking forward to researching the impacts of ocean pollution, animals and food. (Theodore K – 5 Red)
Year 6
My chosen topic is ‘The Power of Dreams’. I am interested in exploring how this relates to me and why it is important to have things in our lives to strive for and achieve.
(Felipe M – 6 White)
I am interested to learn more through my chosen topic of ‘The Power of Technology’. So far I have discovered the issues of when Artificial Intelligence (AI) gets into the hands of the wrong people. I’m interested to delve into the problems that not may people know about. (Nicolae I – 6 Gold)
Through my topic of ‘The Power of Technology’ the average teen spends 14.4 hours per week online. This averages out to be between 2 – 3 hours per day. This causes less time with family and time with friends. I am looking forward to continuing my research on this topic. (James P – 6 Black)
Year 6 Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (DSCC) Infographics Competition
As part of Year 6 learning in Science and Technology in Term 1, students were asked to produce an infographic to compare Earth and one other planet. Year 6 students visited the DSCC as part of their Year 6 Camp in Term 1. Seven submissions were made (one from each class). The team at DSCC deemed Xavier Z's (6 Red) submission the best out of the seven infographics. Here is the feedback given to Xavier by the DSCC team:
“The infographic has a clear and concise comparison of Earth and Mars. The layout is easy to read, the information is well-organised, and the design is visually engaging—exactly the kind of communication we value in science outreach. It’s the kind of poster we could easily imagine displaying in the Visitor Centre, simply because of its clarity and quality”.
Congratulations to Xavier Z and thank you to Mr van der Meer for making this Infographics Competition happen.
