Secondary School

It has been another busy and exciting week in Secondary School, and we look forward to our School’s Foundation Day tomorrow.

Annual Giving Day

Having spent part of this week interviewing prospective Scholarship students from Rural WA, it reinforces our desire to be inclusive of the types of families who would contribute to our school community immensely, but otherwise could not afford for their children to attend. A Rural Scholarship is often for those families who may not be huge landowners, but contribute to rural communities in other ways, the local small business owners and operators, the teachers and nurses, the types of people that small communities rely on and raise children of great character and aspiration. These are the types of families that our Annual Giving Day looks to support through building scholarship funds. Proceeds from our Annual Giving Day also go towards Capital Works projects to help provide excellent facilities for our students to learn and grow, not just now but for years into the future, just as generous donations of the past helped our current students. We ask that all GSG families contribute a minimum of $20 to our School Foundation.

Interschool Cross Country

This week GSG hosted the GSSSSA Interschool Cross Country. Our students performed very well on their ‘home turf’. Overall, the day went really well. The grounds looked fantastic and the students and staff from other schools were thoroughly impressed with our school. In terms of results, GSG ended up winning the Years Seven to Nine category and coming third in the Years Ten to Twelve category, winning the day overall. Congratulations to all the students who put in their best efforts and thank you to our wonderful staff for organising the event.

Interhouse Athletics

A reminder to families that on Friday of Week Five, we are having our Whole School Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Events and trials have started this week on Wednesday, and we will continue to run events through VaCS time up until Week Five. Please ensure families plan around this carnival being on Friday 30 May, it being a compulsory event for students. Interschool teams and eligibility for WAVE Awards are based on attendance and performance on the day. This is an exciting time to gather together as a Whole School community and celebrate the students.

Boarding Week and Free Dress

Next Week is Boarding week for the whole school. But we particularly celebrate this in Secondary School, due to boarders starting school in Year Seven. We have a Boarding Assembly on Monday where the boarders are ‘taking over’, it should be a great time. On Tuesday there is a free dress day for the whole school, with the theme to come dressed as a farmer.

Walk to School Day

Next week on Wednesday, we have a walk to school day. Students, staff, and parents are invited to gather at Coraki Park at 8.00am and walk to school together. There will be a bus to take the students’ school bags to school and the students will be rewarded with a hot chocolate for their efforts once they arrive at school.  We encourage as many Secondary School students as possible to get involved; it’s a wonderful way to interact with our Primary School students, who really look up to the older children.

Twilight Concert

On Thursday of Week Three, there is a Twilight Concert in the Multi-Purpose Sport Complex, hosted by our Music department. It will be a great event, and we will see our talented music students on display. We will have performances from many of our ensembles such as the Jazz Band, the Flute ensemble, the Senior Strings, the Pipe Band and the Senior Vocal Ensemble. It will be an hour of power and a thoroughly enjoyable showcase. Some of those performances can also be seen at the Assembly during Week Four.

St George's Visit - Year Eleven and Twelve

Next Friday at lunchtime, the Head of St George’s College at UWA will visit the school to speak with students about college life. We also have some Year Twelve students who have applied for next year who will have their interviews. If your child is looking towards living in Perth and attending university after school, I highly recommend that they attend this session in the Hall at lunchtime.

Drama Production

On Tuesday afternoon, Year Eight Drama performed their comedy scripts to a group of very excited Year One students. Here is what some of the Year Eight students had to say about it:

“Performing in front of the Year Ones was a great experience, they were a great audience and I hope they enjoyed it very much.” Dylan Stone

“Bailey and I performed an act where I was the bully, and I was asking Bailey (who was acting as a nerd) for his lunch money. Performing in front of the Year Ones was a fun experience and it will be fun to do it again.” Mila Orzel

“Performing in front of the Year Ones was an amazing experience.  Although I was scared I might forget my lines, in the end it was fun because they were an excellent audience.  Everyone performed beautifully!” Bo Anning

Year Eight Drama has explored mime, character exaggeration, and children's theatre. Their performances were the culmination of a term filled with preparation, including script reading, costume and set design, and many rehearsals. These fantastic performances were the result of hard work and dedication.

Thank you to Mrs Gouldthorp and the Year Ones for attending and being such an energetic audience!
