Term 2 Focus: Developing Writing and Reading Skills

This term, we will continue to focus on developing both our writing and reading skills across various genres, with an emphasis on Recount, Poetry, Biography, and Reading Comprehension. Students will engage in different writing protocols and reading strategies, focusing on key areas like voice, structure, creativity, figurative language, and comprehension.

Writing Protocols:

Students will be expected to follow specific rules and expectations while writing. The Author Study will be an integral part of the writing process. All students will participate, and the best pieces will be selected to be featured in the library!

Key Focus Areas:

  • Recount Writing Students will focus on recount writing, with a specific focus on structure, planning, and using the past tense. They will practice drafting, editing, revising, and publishing their work, paying special attention to voice and word choice to bring their writing to life.
    • Story Discussions will link with our Inquiry theme, where students will read a short story about a character overcoming a challenge and discuss what helped them stay strong.
  • Poetry Our focus will shift to Poetry, where students will explore elements like rhyme, structure, style, and creativity. They will delve into figurative language, learning to use alliteration, rhyme, metaphors, similes, hyperbole, and personification to enhance their writing.
  • Biography Writing Later in the term, we will dive into Biography writing, where students will focus on research skills, planning, and using nouns effectively in their writing.

Reading Focus:

  • Reading Comprehension Students will focus on developing strong reading comprehension skills by engaging with a variety of texts. We will explore different reading strategies, including making inferences, identifying key ideas, and summarizing information.
    • Discussion and Analysis Students will participate in discussions about the texts they read, exploring character development, themes, and the author’s purpose. They will also analyze how text structure and language choices contribute to meaning.
    • Independent and Guided Reading Students will have the opportunity to engage in both independent and guided reading activities, which will help improve their fluency, vocabulary, and understanding of different text types.

Focused Writing Skills:

Throughout the term, students will work on essential writing skills including paraphrasing, using possessive apostrophes, and developing their understanding of nouns.
