Mathematics Term 2

Mathematics Focus – Term 2
This term, our focus will be on enhancing students' number skills and applying those concepts to solve problems across various areas of mathematics.
Students will study Measurement, covering essential concepts like Time, Distance, Mass, and Capacity. In Geometry, they will explore Shapes, working with enlargement, shrinking, transformations, and tessellations. Additionally, they’ll investigate the relationship between two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes by creating models and representations.
A key area of focus this term will be Fractions. Students will develop a deeper understanding of fractions as parts of a whole and apply this knowledge in practical contexts. They will work with equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, and ordering fractions in ascending or descending order. Students will also explore addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators, as well as multiplying fractions by whole numbers. They will develop strategies for comparing and converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, while also solving problems that involve fractional parts in real-life scenarios, such as recipes or measurements in cooking and construction.
Our approach to teaching is based on meeting each student's individual learning needs. This may involve solo activities, collaborative group work, targeted lessons, or tailored 'Clinic Groups' designed to either support or challenge learners.
Throughout all these areas, students will focus on developing four key mathematical proficiencies: understanding, fluency, problem solving, and reasoning. Each concept explored will help strengthen one or more of these proficiencies.
We’re excited for a term full of hands-on, engaging learning opportunities!
