Overview

The Certificate III in Information Technology provides secondary school learners with a solid understanding of game design principles and IT help desk support. This course can lead to further study in courses at Certificate IV level and higher, with job prospects in asset creation, game art, game animation, game testing, and IT technical support.

Studying the Certificate III in Information Technology at Holmesglen

This two-year program is for secondary school learners taking on VET studies as part of their school enrolment. Over the course of the program, learners will be able to complete the qualification and have the option of undertaking a Scored Assessment.

 

During the first year of the program, learners will learn how to manage personally identifiable information (PII) and methods of creating 3D Models using industry-standard software, such as Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, and Substance Painter. Students will make original 3D game art, animations, and will learn how to show case them all in a video game using a game engine.

 

During the second year of the program, learners will explore foundational programming and additional IT skill sets. Where they will learn the skills to install and optimise operating system software, provide system administration, create system backups and respond to and provide support to clients. They will also learn to provide and carry out maintenance and fault repair procedures on hardware and software. Finally, they will learn how to install, configure, and secure a small office network. All this will prepare them for the VCE examination.

 

The Certificate III in Information Technology is a hands-on, beginner-friendly course, introducing students to professional IT skills while enjoying game creation. Over two years, students will cover five subjects in game art, design, programming, and IT help desk skills.

The program uses a flipped learning approach, where students receive all resources at the start of class, allowing them to study in advance and fully engage during lessons.

Entry Requirements

Holmesglen requires learners must be enrolled as a VETDSS or VCE VM in Secondary School and have an interest in both game development and IT Support.

 

Learners who undertake this program require digital literacy skills and the ability to:

• turn on a computer

• connect to the internet

• use a mouse, keyboard, headset with microphone or speakers and webcam

• open and close a software application

• conduct a search in a web browser

• send and receive emails

• save a file, and locate a saved file

• download and install the software application.

Assessment

Scored assessment is available for this study. Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for this study must undertake the scored assessment. As a scored VET study this subject will contribute to the student's ATAR, either as one of the student's top 4 studies (the 'primary four') or as a 5th or 6th study increment. 

 

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.

Qualification and Recognition

On completion of the program, you will receive the ICT30120 Certificate III in Information Technology qualification. Secondary school students who complete the ICT30120 Certificate III in Information Technology will be eligible for up to two units of credit at Units 1 and 2 level and at Units 3 and 4 sequence. Score assessment will be based on the Units 3 and 4 sequence partial completion of ICT30120 Certificate III in Information Technology.gy.
