Studying the Certificate II in Hospitality at Holmesglen
The course is taught through a blend of classroom and practical training at Holmesglen's kitchens and student training restaurants, Zest, located at the Glen Waverley campus, and Cilantro, located at the Moorabbin campus.
During this course, you will learn key hospitality skills such as customer service, coffee making, food and beverage service, basic kitchen skills, and methods of cookery. You will also learn about food safety procedures and safe work practices.
In your second year, you can specialise in hospitality or cookery, depending on which pathway you prefer. On completion of your secondary school studies, you can gain credits towards the above listed qualifications.
Entry Requirements
Students for this program must be attending a secondary school and be part of the VETDSS program. The student’s school nominates the students for the program.
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs
Timetable
Year 1: Units 1 and 2
Moorabbin: 1 class per week on Wednesday from 4pm to 8.30pm.
Note: Additional time will be required in the kitchens and restaurant when students undertake practical classes. Classes will finish at approximately 9.30pm. This information will be communicated to students upon enrolment.
At the end of their first year, students have the choice between continuing with Certificate II in Hospitality or completing Certificate II in Cookery. Both courses for year 2 are only conducted at the Glen Waverley Campus.
Year 2: Units 3 and 4
Glen Waverley: SIT20322 Certificate II in Hospitality, 1 class per week on Tuesday from 4pm to 8.30pm.

Glen Waverley: SIT20421 Certificate II in Cookery, 1 class per week on Tuesday from 3.30pm to 9pm.
12 units must be completed in the first year:• 6 core units• 6 elective units

Uniforms, Texts and Equipment
Students will be required to purchase a restaurant uniform as well as a prescribed text – approximately $150. Holmesglen will supply knives and the chef’s uniform for kitchen work in this program.
On successful completion of the first year students will receive - a Food Handlers' Certificate or equivalent; Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate and Certificate II in Hospitality.

Assessment
Scored assessment is available for this study. Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for this study must undertake the scored assessment. As a scored VET study this subject will contribute to the student's ATAR, either as one of the student's top 4 studies (the 'primary four') or as a 5th or 6th study increment.
