This VDSS animal care course provides you with the basic skills and knowledge in order to become an animal carer. You will learn how to care for a variety of animals and provide information on companion animals, products and services.
You will gain the practical skills and basic knowledge you need for entry level work in the animal care industry. You will learn how to assist with general animal care, provide food and water for animals and follow occupational health and safety procedures in the workplace.
You will undertake work in our animal facility throughout the year giving you the opportunity to work with mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, fish and reptiles. You will also have dogs and cats regularly attend class for practical training.
Students are expected to complete components of their work (like written assessment and research) out of class time.
Students will complete two mandatory full day practical sessions each year.
Career Outcomes
This course may provide you with entry level employment in animal rescue centres, pet retail shops, welfare organisations and veterinary clinics, etc.
Assessment
This program is not a scored study. Students who successfully complete the Unit 3 & 4 sequence will receive one ATAR increment, which is calculated as 10 per cent of the fourth-ranked study score from the student's 'top four' Unit 3 & 4 studies.
Campus
This program is delivered by Box Hill (City) Institute. Students attend the City campus on Wednesday afternoons for the majority of the classes.
Throughout the year, students are required to attend approximately six (6) full day workshops in Box Hill (Elgar Campus) and will be required to arrange their own transportation on theses occasions.
Please note: Students are required to be up to date with their tetanus vaccination for entry into the course.
