Mathematical Achievement

Celebrating Mathematical Achievement at St Mark's

At St Marks, we are proud to offer a range of opportunities that extend and enrich students’ mathematical thinking. We believe every learner should have access to challenge, creativity, and problem-solving and this year, many of our students embraced that challenge with enthusiasm and excellence.

Australian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO)

Every year, over 100,000 students across Australia and New Zealand take part in Australian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads competitions. These events help students build their reasoning skills and deepen their mathematical thinking.

This year, students in Years 4 to 6 took part in both the Maths Olympiad and the Maths Games.

We are delighted to share the following results:

  • Our Maths Olympiad team achieved a result in the top 40% of all teams.
  • Oscar B was our highest performer and placed in the Top 10% of all participants.
  • Ricky H also achieved a Top 10% result.
  • Ethan C and Keegan N achieved results in the Top 25%.

Congratulations also to our Maths Games participants:

  • Ethan P placed first in our school group.
  • Ryan L and Jaden H achieved equal second.
  • Jayden S, G'zelle L and Ethan K achieved equal third.

University of Melbourne Mathematics and Statistics Research Challenge

This year, we also had students take part in the 2025 School of Mathematics and Statistics Research Challenge. In this challenge, students acted as real mathematical researchers, investigating open-ended problems with creativity, teamwork, and inquiry. We are incredibly proud of their curiosity and commitment to this project.

This project was a significant undertaking, and all students are to be commended for their commitment and curiosity.

  • Edwina H, G'zelle L and Cynthia L received Participation Awards.
  • Oscar B, Keegan N and Ricky H achieved results in the Top 40% and received a Merit Certificate.

We invite our school community to celebrate their achievements and view their projects below.

Congratulations to all participating students!

Maths Games Day held at Keysborough Primary School - Written by Edwina

On Tuesday the 25th of November, 12 students ranging from Grade 4-6 participated in Maths Games Day held at Keysborough Primary School. We had 3 teams – Team 1 (Cynthia L, Oscar B, Nathaniel P and Kenny N), Team 2 (Ethan P Ricky H, Alan T and Ryan L) and Team 3 (G’zelle L, Keegan N, Ethan K and Edwina H). Everyone worked really hard in representing our school and we all did a great job!

Maths Games Day was really fun and I was really happy to be there for my school! Everyone was competitive but I could tell that it was a fun kind of competitiveness and everyone just wanted to win for their team. In the first block of the day, we did problem solving, in which we were given sheets of questions ranging from 1-72 and worked in our teams to solve. This part of the day was mainly about teamwork and communication. After our recess break, we did more fun activities such as working in pairs against another pair to use the 4 operations with 4 numbers and reach a total of 24. This game mostly tested our mental maths skills, although some people used working out paper. There was also a ‘Guess the Number’ competition for $10 vouchers. After our lunch break, we did a few more activities such as one on one games with opposite schools such as “Chase Zero,” in which we gave each other numbers and whoever got to 0 in the least amount of moves won. It was a really great day and everyone had a really great time! It was really fun meeting new people and competing against each other at the same level.

Keegan N, a fifth grader from Team 3, won the Mental Maths Giant, finishing with first place and a gold medal – Congrats Keegan! Another achievement by Oscar B, a sixth grader from Team 1, guessed almost the exact amount of jellybeans in the jar, a contest which had been set up at the start of the day where you had to estimate how many jellybeans there were in the jar – Good job Oscar! By the end of the day, the total score was announced throughout all 11 schools. In third place was Team 2 of our school (Ethan P, Ricky H, Alan T and Ryan L), in second place was also our school, Team 3 (G’zelle L, Keegan N, Ethan K and Edwina H). Everyone was really proud of themselves and worked their hardest. We all definitely deserved a shiny gold medal for putting in lots of effort!
