FIRE Carrier Leaders Reflections
By the FIRE Carrier Team – Anita, Saina, Leon and Elinam
This year has been a very special and meaningful journey for us as FIRE Carrier leaders at St Mark’s. We have been proud to represent our school in activities that help build understanding, respect, and reconciliation with First Nations peoples.
In Term 2, we were honoured to be invited to the Team Kids RAP Launch Party. The event began with a beautiful Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony and a guided walk through the park, where we learned about the importance of trees and plants in Aboriginal culture. Everyone was very welcoming, and we were grateful for the gifts and the opportunity to witness such a respectful and moving ceremony.
As part of our role, we led a staff meeting to review our school’s Covenant and actions toward reconciliation. One important suggestion from the meeting was to make our Acknowledgement of Country more visible on the school website. In response, we created a video where each FIRE Carrier shared part of the Acknowledgement- something we’re very proud of.
We also took part in the Walk for Truth in the city, walking 5 kilometres from the Shrine of Remembrance to Parliament House. Even though it was long and tiring, we walked proudly, carrying our St Mark’s flag and signs showing our support. It was an incredible experience to see Travis Lovett walk into Parliament House to begin treaty negotiations- an historic and inspiring moment.
Recently, our whole school experienced an unforgettable First Nations Incursion. Students took part in activities such as painting boomerangs, listening to storytelling, enjoying traditional music performances, and exploring cultural artifacts. The feedback from students and teachers was glowing. Everyone loved learning through fun experiences and hearing the stories that connect land, culture, and community.
We are proud of the work we have done so far and look forward to continuing our journey of learning, sharing, and leading reconciliation at St Mark’s.
