Gospel Reflection - Christ the King Sunday
Summary
In this story, Jesus is on the cross and people around Him are teasing and making fun of Him. Two criminals are beside Him. One joins in the teasing, but the other realises Jesus has done nothing wrong. He bravely speaks up, admits his own mistakes, and asks Jesus to remember him. Jesus answers with love and kindness, saying, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”
This moment shows us that Jesus never gives up on anyone. He always offers hope, forgiveness, and a fresh start - no matter what.
Scripture – Luke 23:35–43
The people stayed there before the cross watching Jesus. As for the leaders, they jeered at him. ‘He saved others,’ they said ‘let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.’ The soldiers mocked him too, and when they approached to offer vinegar they said, ‘If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.’ Above him there was an inscription: ‘This is the King of the Jews.’
One of the criminals hanging there abused him. ‘Are you not the Christ?’ he said. ‘Save yourself and us as well.’ But the other spoke up and rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God at all?’ he said. ‘You got the same sentence as he did, but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus,’ he said ‘remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ ‘Indeed, I promise you,’ he replied ‘today you will be with me in paradise.’
Reflection
This story reminds us that Jesus meets us exactly where we are — even when we feel stuck, overwhelmed, or not at our best. The second criminal shows courage: he tells the truth, he stands up for what’s right, and he asks for help. Jesus responds with love.
As families, this passage invites us to practise forgiveness, to slow down before judging others, and to believe that people can change and grow. Jesus shows us that every person deserves compassion, even on their hardest days.
- When have you needed a “fresh start” or a second chance?
- Who in our family might need some extra kindness or patience this week?
- How can we speak up for others the way the second criminal spoke up for Jesus?
- What helps us forgive when someone has hurt our feelings?
- Where can we bring hope or encouragement to someone else?
