Literacy
In Literacy we are continuing to learn about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. We have learnt about the base words ‘mob/ mot/ mov’ which mean ‘to move.’ For example, mob + ile = mobile/ mot + or = motor/ mov + e + ment = movement/ pro+ mot + e = promote/ de+ mot + e = demote.
We are also learning about the Latin base word ‘aud’ meaning ‘to hear’. Words such as auditory, audio, auditorium, audition and audible amongst many others are formed from this base word.
We are continuing to learn about the spelling rule called ‘211’. This spelling rule is applied to words that have two syllables and a vowel suffix is added to change the meaning and spelling of the word. For example, the word ‘forbid’ has an emphasis on the second syllable, therefore when adding the vowel suffix ‘ing’, the letter ‘d’ is doubled to become ‘forbidding’.
When the emphasis is placed on the first syllable of a word which has two syllables, and you add a vowel suffix, the last consonant letter is NOT doubled. For example, the word ‘offer’ becomes ‘offering’ when adding the vowel suffix ‘ing’.
We are also revising Persuasive Texts and spending a considerable amount of time exploring the specific language being used in Persuasive Writing. We are practising writing persuasive texts using several practice titles such as ‘The school canteen should sell hot chips’/ ‘Our class should have a fish’/ ‘All schools should have a therapy dog’.
Maths
In maths, we are continuing to learn more about Financial Maths. The students have been given worded financial maths problems to solve incorporating a variety of maths operations including financial maths. The students are also learning about measurement including mms, cms, m and kms/ mls, litres/ gms, kgs. We are also using a strategy called ‘Retrieval’ where the students are given previously learned maths from earlier in the year, and attempt to recall the method used to solve the maths. This strategy is working extremely well as the students are constantly revising maths in addition to learning new maths operations and strategies.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, the Level 3 students are learning about Democracy and how democracy works in Australia. The students are currently learning about the following:
A community is a group of people who have something in common. This may be living or working in the same area, a shared history or beliefs or interests.
Students will research an Australian who has had a positive impact on their community. Students could research one of the following people or use the websites to short list some Australians:
Ash Barty – tennis player, awarded Young Australian of the year in 2020.
GEM Chat – We are continuing to discuss ‘Rights and Responsibilities’ as well as ‘Empathy’ in the classroom and in society.
