Hello Level 1 Families,
Welcome back! As we head into Week 7 next week, it’s hard to believe how quickly the term is flying by. Students have been working very hard on their assessments this week, and we’ll be wrapping them up next week as we move towards report writing and the end of term. We are incredibly proud of how our students have conducted themselves during testing — showing focus, respect for those around them, and great care when using our school iPads.
Have another great fortnight at SEPS!
Term 4 Reminders:
Homework is continuing today. Your child should have brought their homework book home today with their new activity sheet. Homework will be due back at school by Monday, 1st December as the Friday, 28th November will be a curriculum day.
We encourage students to jump onto their Mathletics tasks at home if possible. The activities teachers set are to consolidate/revise what we have learnt in class. Log-ins and passwords are in your child's diary.
Thank you for your support with this.
Our classroom doors open at 8:50am everyday. This is to allow for students to enter the classroom, put their drink bottle and diary away, and then complete a 'soft start' at their desk.
We kindly remind parents to say goodbye to their children at the classroom door.
1B and 1C change their take home readers every FRIDAY and 1A will change theirs over each WEDNESDAY. Please remember to pack take home books on your allocated day.
Hats should now be worn until the end of the year.
Friday is still our library day, so please remember to bring library books back each Friday so that students can borrow a new book or two.
Heart words: This coming fortnight we will be focusing on words such as friend, thought and trouble and writing these words into sentences.
This week we focussed on the words below:

Phonemes: Next week will continue to learn about the 'ie' phoneme- as in piece and pie.
Morphology: During our core literacy lessons, we will continue learning about changing the 'y' at the end of a word to 'i' when a suffix is added, as in happy-happiest.

Over the past fortnight, our Level 1 students have been busy developing their writing skills through a focus on information reports. To link with our inquiry into ancient civilisations, students explored fascinating facts about Mesopotamia—one of the world’s earliest known societies.
Together, we learned how to organise our writing into clear sections with headings, introduce a topic, and include interesting details and descriptions. Students wrote about the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, farming and irrigation, the invention of writing (cuneiform), and life in the first cities. They practised using factual language, writing in full sentences, and presenting their information neatly.
It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity and confidence grow as they learned how to share what they know in an informative and structured way!
This week in Maths, we have been learning to tell the time on an analogue clock, focusing on half past, quarter past and quarter to. While students have found this a little tricky, they have shown great persistence and a positive attitude towards their learning. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to use retrieval practice to help consolidate our understanding of time. Looking ahead, our next focus will be on place value — exploring numbers up to the thousands.
In Inquiry, we have just completed our unit on Mesopotamia, finishing with a look at the fascinating gods, goddesses and the beautiful temples they were worshipped in. Students wrote an impressive piece showcasing everything they have learnt about this ancient civilisation — including farming, laws, cuneiform (the first form of writing), and how Mesopotamia became known as the first civilisation. Over the coming weeks, students will have the opportunity to create something to show their learning about Mesopotamia during class time- more information to come about that!
