Learning

Literacy

Students are being introduced to the prefixes re- and un-, helping them understand that these small parts can change the meaning of a base word. They are beginning to make connections that some words can include both a prefix and a suffix, such as relocked. Through this learning, students are developing an awareness that base words are essential, as they form the foundation for understanding how prefixes and suffixes work. Additionally, we are revisiting previously taught phonemes, reinforcing their phonological knowledge and supporting their growing spelling and reading skills.

Heart words

Students are reading heart words well in texts and isolation. They are working on writing them correctly when writing a story, especially; there, they, what, like and as.

Writing

Students are continuing to develop their narrative ideas and are becoming more confident in creating their own stories. Over the coming weeks, we will be exploring the Pig the Pug series to help us understand character traits, story problems, and how authors make their stories engaging and fun. Using these books as inspiration, students will then have the opportunity to plan, write, and share their own imaginative stories — becoming authors themselves!

Numeracy

Over Weeks 5 and 6, Foundation students have been exploring addition and subtraction concepts in fun and hands-on ways. They learned that when adding or subtracting zero, the number stays the same. Students have also been revising addition and subtraction using part-part-whole circles and tens frames with counters, consolidating their understanding by forming number sentences.

We revisited ordering numbers to 20 through an engaging class activity where each student was given a number card and worked together to arrange themselves from smallest to largest. It was wonderful to see the excitement, teamwork, and communication as students helped each other find their place along the number line!

Inquiry

Students have loved delving into their understanding and learning of First Australians. They have enjoyed exploring traditional instruments used in songs and storytelling, such as the didgeridoo, clap sticks, the warup (Torres Strait Islander drum) and kulaps. Through these experiences, students discovered how art and music hold deep cultural significance, passing stories and traditions down through generations. Ms Harris-Tudor shared some special items from home, including woven baskets and an echidna made by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers from remote Central and Western communities, as well as earrings, a baby rattle, and a woven goanna from Galiwin’ku, Elcho Island. The students were fascinated by these beautiful examples of culture and craftsmanship.
