Art Open Classroom - Pottery Exhibition

What a success!

Thank you to all the students, teachers and families who came along to the Pottery Exhibition on Friday afternoon last week. 

The room was BUSY and bursting with enthusiasm. There were so many amazing works on display and it was so lovely to celebrate the enormous achievements of the Grade 1-6 students. 

Many also enjoyed making a pinch pot which will be fired in the next couple of weeks.

Prep Weaving

Ojos de Dios (oh-ho-day-DEE-ohs) adopt a weaving tradition that has roots from indigenous practices in Mexico. Ojos de Dios were first made by Wixárika, who are also known as Huichol, during the 15th century. The Wixárika people are decedents of Aztec and are known for their elaborate, colorful bead and yarn works.

The Wixárika people have strong connections to the land. The four ends of the Ojos de Dios represent water, fire, air and earth. They considered them good luck and used them as a form of protection.

Grade 5/6 - Let's Party!

To celebrate nearing the end of another year, and the graduation of our Grade 6 students, we are creating a self portrait inspired by the upcoming NGV children's exhibition, Let's Party by Danielle Brustman.

This week, students used Canva to design their own digital fabrics. We will be using these fabric designs to create our party outfit in our self-portraits. We learned about forming a radial design which could be applied to a re-occurring pattern. We then used a pattern maker app in Canva to create a fabric design.

Grade 3/4 - Yarn Art

The Wixárika people are also known for their Yarn Art. To make yarn paintings an artist spreads beeswax on a board and then sketches out a design. The design is filled in by carefully pressing brightly colored yarns into the wax.

We created our own Yarn Art by pressing yarn fed through a straw into contact paper. The students found it incredibly satisfying and what they created was so interesting and varied.

Grade 1/2 Sewing

The Grade 1/2 students have been practising sewing skills as part of a Textiles unit. They practised tying a knot, threading a needle, doing a satin and running stitch and drawing with yarn.

Artist of the Month

Catia (4C)

Catia loves to draw and uses a lot of her spare time doing so. She loves realism but also loves to draw cartoons. She has taught herself to draw through lots of persistence and practise. She is most proud an eye that she made using digital art techniques. Her advice to other students who would like to improve their art skills is, "always try to use grid lines (it makes a big difference) and don't listen to the haters!"
