Room 2
Foundation - Year 2
This fortnight, our students have been developing one of the most important foundations for becoming confident writers, explicit handwriting.
Rather than simply practising letters, students are being explicitly taught how to form each letter correctly using consistent teacher language, modelling and guided practice. Every lesson follows the same routine: I Do, We Do, You Do, helping students build confidence through repetition and success.
Students learn to:
say the letter pathway aloud as they write.
Letters are taught in groups that are formed in similar ways, rather than in alphabetical order. This helps students build good handwriting habits more quickly, making writing feel easier, smoother and more confident over time.

Our SWPBS focus has been on Self-Belief, having the confidence to give things a go, even when they feel challenging.
Students explored what self-belief looks and sounds like in the classroom by practising patience, self-control, positive self-talk and starting each lesson ready to learn. Through our 'Confidence Coach' activities, they worked together to solve everyday classroom situations and learnt how encouraging thoughts such as "I'll give it a try" and "Mistakes help me learn" can help us grow.
Our key message was simple: Believe in yourself, keep trying, and remember that every mistake is an opportunity to learn.
💚Understanding Stress
This fortnight, our students have been learning about stress, what it is, how it can make us feel, and the positive strategies we can use to manage it.
Through games, discussions and collaborative activities, students explored how stress can look and feel different for everyone. They identified common situations that might cause stress, recognised the physical signs our bodies give us (such as butterflies in our tummy or a racing heart), and discussed healthy ways to respond.
Working together, students helped our classroom character 'Wibbly' solve different stressful situations by suggesting calming strategies such as deep breathing, talking to a trusted adult, taking a break, stretching, using positive self-talk and finding a quiet space.
A key message from our learning was that everyone experiences stress from time to time, and recognising our feelings is the first step in managing them. By building these skills early, students are developing confidence, resilience and practical strategies they can use both at school and at home.
