Helping Children Navigate Technology

Technology is a big part of family life, and finding the right balance can sometimes be tricky. From gaming and watching videos to chatting with friends, there are many positive ways children use technology. At the same time, it can be challenging for children to know when to switch off, make safe choices online and manage the social pressures that can come with being connected.

At school, students take part in cyber safety lessons that explore topics such as digital balance, online safety, privacy, respectful online behaviour and making positive choices when using technology. These lessons give students opportunities to talk about situations they may encounter online and develop strategies to help them navigate the digital world safely and confidently.

These conversations are even more valuable when they continue at home. Simple chats about what children are playing, watching or doing online can help keep communication open and make it easier for children to come to trusted adults if something doesn't feel right.

The webinar explores some of the challenges families can face when navigating technology, including finding a healthy balance, gaming and why it can be so difficult for children to switch off, online safety and privacy, and managing peer pressure in the online world.

There are also some great resources available to support families at home. The eSafety Commissioner’s parent resources provide practical advice on topics including screen time, gaming, online safety, privacy, parental controls and having conversations with children about their online experiences.

Common Sense Media is another helpful resource, offering independent ratings, reviews and advice to help families make informed choices about games, apps, movies and other media.

We hope these resources provide some helpful ideas and support as we work together to help your children develop healthy, safe and balanced technology habits.
