The Arts and Technologies 

Throughout the past few weeks, our Year 11 Art Creative Practice students have been experimenting with alternative photography methods. Taking advantage of the warmer, sunnier weather, students have created a range of artworks using cyanotypes, a photographic printing process that produces distinctive blue-and-white images using light-sensitive materials.

Students learnt about the cyanotype printing process and applied their knowledge through hands-on experimentation. Many trialled the process using collected natural materials, such as flowers and leaves, while others experimented with stencils. These experimental pieces allowed students to explore different ideas and techniques before developing their concepts further.

As their understanding of the process grew, many students incorporated cyanotype techniques into the development of a final artwork. Several students also created their own film negatives, allowing them to produce highly detailed photographic images through the cyanotype process.

The project will continue with an exciting collaborative component, with artworks exchanged between our class and students from another school. Each participant will then create a new artwork in response to the work they receive, encouraging them to interpret and build upon another artist’s ideas in their own way.
