This week, we celebrated Science Week, with students invited to explore, investigate, experiment and have some fun with science through a range of lunchtime activities. 

Students kicked off the week by putting their chemistry knowledge to the test in the Periodic Table Challenge, working their way through the elements of the periodic table to see how far they could get. Congratulations to Callum Chalmers, this year’s winner, who made it all the way to Ag – Silver (atomic number 47)! An impressive effort! 

On Wednesday, students had the opportunity to explore science from several different perspectives. In Biology, they entered the microscopic world, examining pond water under microscopes and searching for tiny living organisms. 

Psychology challenged students to question whether they could always trust what they see through a range of visual illusions, while Physics provided some hair-raising fun with the Van de Graaff generator and the science of static electricity. 

There was plenty of excitement in Chemistry on Thursday with our Elephant’s Toothpaste demonstration. Students watched an impressive eruption of foam while seeing a rapid chemical reaction in action. Students also tested their knowledge of biodiversity and conservation with the IUCN Red List Animal Sort, attempting to match different animals with their conservation status and discovering which species are most at risk of extinction. 

To finish the week, students took on the Periodic Table Jigsaw Puzzle, racing to piece together the periodic table and put their knowledge of the elements to the test. 

It was fantastic to see so many students coming along at lunchtime, getting involved, asking questions, challenging themselves and experiencing science beyond the classroom.
