Selamat Hari Merdeka!

Happy Indonesian Independence Day!

What an amazing day of celebrations we had on Monday 17 August to celebrate 81 years of Indonesian Independence! Thank you to everybody who ordered classic Indonesian favourites nasi goreng or mie goreng on the day. We hope you enjoyed your meals as much as we enjoyed ours! All meals were provided by local Indonesian business Loyang Oma.

We enjoyed the day by playing Indonesian games in the B block amphitheatre, including the students favourite makan kerupuk. It’s played like a donut eating contest, but with giant colourful Indonesian prawn crackers. Well done to all the winners!

Students also had the opportunity to try on traditional Indonesian clothes and masks, and play with rattan balls traditionally used for sepak takraw in small circles as a simple practice used to prepare for the real game. We hope you enjoy the pictures of all the fun and games!

Back in the classroom this term, year 7 students have been learning how to talk about their friends and describe all kinds of fun activities that they like to do. If your kids don’t want to tell you what they did today in English, you could try asking them in Indonesian instead now!

Did you know research suggests that people answer more calmly and thoughtfully in their second language!

Our year 8s have been describing their dream homes in Indonesian. We have heard about everything from luxurious mansions with 15 bedrooms, and simple forest homes with just a lounge room and kitchen. Students have been doing an amazing job building their language over the last year and a half and we are now seeing that all brought together in this unit to describe every aspect of their home and how it’s used.
