Year 7 Hazard Experts: Learning Through Collaboration

Our Year 7 Geography students have been putting their hazard knowledge to the test through an engaging Hazard Experts Carousel!

Working collaboratively in small groups, students rotated through a series of stations, with just three minutes at each stop to build on the work of the previous group. Rather than simply completing a worksheet, students became “experts” by contributing, discussing and extending each other’s ideas.

Across the five rounds, students explored hazards by asking:

• Know It – What are the key facts about the hazard?
• Locate It – Where does it occur and why?
• Impact It – How does it affect people, the environment and the economy?
• Respond to It – How can we prepare, respond and reduce risk?
• Examine It – What question could we be asked about this hazard?

The activity encouraged students to communicate ideas, think critically and collaborate effectively, while also developing their ability to apply geographical knowledge to different hazards.

It was fantastic to see students building on one another’s ideas and taking responsibility for their group’s learning. By the end of the carousel, each group had contributed to a much more complete understanding of how hazards occur, their impacts and how communities can manage risk.
