What's happening in Term 4?

Premier's Reading Challenge 2023

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2023 completed on Friday 8th September.

We are excited to announce Karoo’s final tally following 192 days of reading 6813 books and publishing 619 book reviews. Congratulations to every student who participated in this epic reading challenge, we hope you enjoyed many adventures, connected with some exciting characters, discovered new places and authors!

A big round of applause to our Grade 2 students as the year level winners, reading a total of 2556 books!  Ms Bacalja and the students of 2B really raised the bar reading 1697 books which has earned them a special class prize to be enjoyed this term!

The library window displayed a weekly tally of the results, from the beginning, with a ladder for the Top 5 readers in the school.  We are very proud of the following students for this “Amazing Race” we tip our reading hats off to you and the commitment you displayed.

Our Library Captains, Alyssa, James and Miley, will be presenting prizes to the following students during our next whole school assembly (Friday 20th October).

Hetav from 4K – 549 books

Braxton S from 1B – 369 books

Braxton R from 2B – 306 books

Koah R from 3D - 272

Michael F from 5D - 258

We also give a special mention to Levi R from FE who recorded 257 books, only narrowly missing a place in the top 5 but whose efforts do not go unrewarded!

Certificates will be issued by the Premiers’ Reading Challenge to all students who completed the challenge requirements and handed out once we have received them.

Scholastic Book Fair – Theme “Hats off to Reading”

The book fair cases have arrived and have been set up in the Library!

The fair is open to the school community from Monday 16th – Friday 20th and again on Monday 23rd October during the following times:

8:45-9:00am

3:30-3:45pm

Students will be invited to browse and complete wish lists to bring home during their library sessions.

Book Author Visit – Jane Godwin

Monday 16th October – 9:00 until 11:30am

This special occasion is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn even more about the practices of professional authors and how they write the interesting and engaging stories we love!

Jane will be presenting 3 sessions throughout the morning.

Interestingly, Jane’s husband and fellow author Michael Wagner, was our highly entertaining guest speaker in 2022!

We have a display table and notice board in the Library with lots of interesting information about Jane and a selection of her books both old and new which will be available to borrow following her visit.

The Great Book Swap

PLEASE DON’T FORGET our Great Book Swap event to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).  As part of the event Karoo is assigned to the MARANYDJALK house – this translates as Stingray.

The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, learn more about Indigenous Languages and culture, while raising funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).  This year the ILF are aiming to raise $180,000! In registering to host a Great Book Swap event Karoo will be actively helping to gift the target of 18,000 new, carefully chosen books to children in remote Communities across Australia.

Consider what book or books you would like to donate to this wonderful charity initiative then place them in the clearly signed hamper in the office foyer. Books should be in a good condition, it could be something you have just finished reading and would love for other students to enjoy!

The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for a gold coin donation. The book swap event will be held in the school Library on:

Tuesday 14th November, 8:45am – 3:45pm

Students will be invited to visit with their class during the day and bring along their gold coin donations to browse and select a book they would like to take home.
