'Secret Name Paintings'
Students had to 'hide' the letters of their names amongst various watercolours to make it tricky for a viewer to see who it belongs to! Next week they will add pattern details using paint pens and mould magiclay into the shape of their letters to place on top.
Grade 1/2
'Bev and Kev' Constructions
There's been a lot of fun mess in these classes this week as the final plaster has been applied and painting has begun! Their constructions have been tested out for durability and so far they are holding up well! Next week will see them with a finished paint job, eye lashes and a friendly Kev to sit on her nose.
Grade 3/4
Analogous Apple and Zebras
Students watercolour techniques have been showcased this week with the colourful zebras they have created to show their understanding of analogous colours. They also collaged some apples following the colours around the wheel.
Grade 5
Buddy Bears
It has been wonderful to see the concentration and perseverance of the Grade 5 students in creating their precious bear for their buddy. So much creativity, teamwork, peer teaching as well as thought and effort has gone into these gifts, I'm sure their Prep friends will treasure them for years to come.
Grade 6
Students have been learning about Urban Art and the differences between graffiti and street art. They practised 3D lettering and adding elements to make their name 'pop'.
Science
Maker Space has been paused for term 4 so we can delve deeper into Science.
Grade 1 and 2
Students have been exploring physics and investigating force and motion. Experiments have been conducted each week to assist students in understanding the Scientific Process and scientific fundamentals.
They have also been learning how their iPad can be utilised as a handy measurement and documentation tool.
Grade 3 and 4
Students have been learning about erosion and how it changes our Earth's surface. We walked around the school to search for examples of erosion in our school yard - naturally caused erosion and erosion that has been exacerbated by human impact.
Students worked through the Scientific Process to test their observations in controlled erosion experiments that assisted them in providing advice to landowners on how to protect their property from erosion.
Grade 5 and 6
Students have jumped into learning about our Solar System. They chose a planet to research in more detail that they then shared within small groups.
We discussed what potential for life means in regards to planets, the difference between orbit and rotation of planets and the time taken for each planet to do so.
To remember the order of planets, from closest to the sun to furthest, we have used a very handy saying: "My Very Excellent Mum Just Served Us Noodles." - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
We then created a scale version of the solar system that started within our classroom, with a sun as big as our students are tall, and ended up having to stretch outside of the classroom and down the path. It is still difficult to wrap our head around the vast distances of our solar system.
Sport
Regional Athletics
We recently had two of our students, Harvey and Rachel, attend the Eastern Regional Athletics (EMR) carnival. Harvey competed in the 1500m race and Rachel in the Long Jump. Just to qualify for this day is an amazing achievement, as it required them to progress through the levels of school, district and then division. We are very proud of them and hope that they are proud of themselves too.
Regional Hooptime Playoffs
On Wednesday 25th October, our Grade 4 All Star Boys competed in the Regional Hooptime Playoffs at the State Basketball Centre. They had an amazing day, winning all of their matches, including the Grand Final. What an achievement!
They will now progress through to the State Finals Day in December, where they will have the opportunity to compete for the State Championship.
We would like to thanks all of the families of these children for their support in enabling them to participate in this day. A special thankyou to Trav and Vanessa for working with the team as Coach and Team Manager.
Interschool Sports Division Playoffs
Earlier this term, we had three teams who qualified to compete in the Maroondah Division Playoffs. We would like to congratulate all members of the Hotshots Mixed, Hotshots Girls and Volleybounce Mixed teams on this wonderful achievement. All three teams competed to the best of their abilities and had a wonderful day. We would also like to thank the parent volunteers and families for supporting these teams to compete.
Maroondah Division Cricket Blast
This Friday, 28th October, we are taking 4 teams of Grade 5/6 students to compete at the Maroondah Division Cricket Blast tournament. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the game of cricket in a modified and inclusive setting. The teams have been training hard and are ready to give their best effort on the day.
