Health & Physical Education

National Health & Physical Education (HPE) Day was celebrated on Wednesday 6 September. It aims to highlight the importance of HPE in the curriculum. Based on the latest available data, of children and adolescents aged 2–17 (ABS): One in four (25%) are living with overweight or obesity. Research shows that young people who participate in regular physical activity experience; decreased likelihood of overweight and obesity, increased levels of engagement, improved academic achievement, and better health outcomes in adulthood. The Mazenod community plays a vital role in promoting the benefits of leading an active and healthy lifestyle. Prioritising our physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health contributes to a strong level of health and wellbeing.

On Friday 8 September the Change for Change and Emergency Services Assembly was held. The Year 12 Leaders chose to support The Black Dog Institute to raise awareness around mental health. Students and staff were encouraged to wear a sports jersey (Hawthorn FC of course) as way of promoting physical activity as a strategy to improve mental health and wellbeing. Acknowledging the magnificent work of Emergency Services is closely related to the final area of study in VCE Health and Human Development. Not only do Emergency Services serve our community, but they also provide amazing support to our neighbouring countries in crisis.

Term 3 has provided a range of practical activities, both on and off-site to complement each subject. Highlights from junior students included swimming, netball, rock climbing, resistance training, basketball and handball. Whilst many senior students tried their luck at International rules, with classes utilising the school GPS units to analyse data to improve performance. Seniors have also participated in numerous training methods, including interval, continuous, fartlek, circuit and resistance training.

Good luck to all Units 3&4 students who are preparing for their final assessments of their secondary schooling journey. Do not forget this message when managing the stresses of the hard work ahead.

Enjoy the term break ahead and remember any physical activity is better than none. Look after your health and wellbeing and get moving this spring!
