Library News

As you may know I love reading! For me it’s one of life’s enjoyments especially these days as I sit with my granddaughter and regularly read stories with her. She is learning with every page we turn that reading is to be shared, enjoyed and loved.

Good children’s books engage, create wonder, explore concepts and can teach us all about the world. As we look forward to celebrating 50 Years of Education at Rowville Primary School on Friday 27th October, 2023 I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite children’s picture books over the past five decades. Yes it was difficult for me to narrow down my choices but here they are!

The 1970’s

 The 1980’s

 The 1990’s

The 2000’s

The 2010’s

All of these picture books are available at school, some are classics, and some are still popular with many of our students today. There are so many wonderful children’s picture books for all of us to enjoy. Make reading an enjoyable part of your day and share your favourite books with the one’s you love.

SCHOLASTIC BOOKCLUB

The brochures for Scholastic Bookclub Issue 7 were distributed this week. There are a lot of titles with a Christmas theme (try Where’s Santa’s Elf? $3.00, Laugh O’Clock Stocking Stuffer $3.00) as well as many new releases (The Bad Guys Episode 18 $9.00, Pretty Please Do Not Open This Book $12.00), and popular series titles (Dork Diaries I Love Paris $14.00, The 169th Storey Treehouse $10.00). There are Diaries, Kits and even a Lamborghini Poster for $1.00! Remember that every dollar spent earns reading rewards that then enables us to add new resources to our library collection. It’s a win-win situation. Orders are due by Monday 9th October, 2023. Thank you.

169TH STOREY TREEHOUSE

Andy Griffiths and illustrator Terry Denton have just released the last book in the Treehouse series titled The 169th Storey Treehouse. This is the thirteenth book in the series. Terry drew thirteen platforms in the first book. The series took thirteen years to finish. There are thirteen chapters in every book and thirteen books in the series.

Andy has said that he, Jill and Terry are a team and brainstorm ideas all the time. He says that if you write one idea per day you will have 365 ideas at the end of the year and maybe one or two of those ideas can be turned into a story. He has also said that you need to keep reading to get more ideas.

This might be the last book in the Treehouse series however in November this year he has a new book being released - The Complete Treehouse Guide to all 169 levels, 150 characters and all the machines and gadgets and I believe it includes a trivia quiz for all those Treehouse fans out there! Andy also announced that he has a new series coming out in 2024. I can’t wait to see what that’s all about!

Happy Reading!

ROWVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

Ron Pickett teacher and Principal of Rowville Primary School in the 1980’s wrote our school song. “In the foothills of the Dandenong’s, where the air is clean and free, a lovely school lies nestled there, among the bush and trees.”  The first lines of our wonderful school song sets the scene beautifully for Rowville Primary School 1973 to 2023.

As you are aware we celebrate our 50th Birthday this year. Back at the beginning we had 273 students, 7 classes, 9 staff and a fantastic group of enthusiastic parents and people from the local community who worked tirelessly for many years to get Rowville Primary School open. Our first School Committee saw the success first hand as during the 1980’s we steadily grew to be the largest school in the State with over 1,000 students.

Although school began at the start of the 1973 school year, our School was officially opened by Councillor Bernie Seebeck and our first Principal Mr Paul Quinlivian on 14th December 1973 where the whole community gathered to celebrate its first successful year.

The school buildings and grounds have grown, expanded, shifted and upgraded as the years progressed. Everyone who has been a part of Rowville Primary School's journey has grown along with it.

We’ve had School Productions, Sports Carnivals, Christmas Concerts, and lots of community events. We’ve highlighted reading and writing through Book Week and Education Week celebrations. Our student’s artwork is constantly on display throughout the school and everyone takes pride in their work.

We are very much looking forward to celebrating 50 Years of Education on Friday 27th October, 2023. Join us at Rowville Primary School’s Birthday Party 5.00pm – 8.00pm. There will be activities on stage, a mystery historical walking tour of the school, cooking demonstrations, sports activities, stalls, games, tree planting and refreshments. Everyone is welcome to attend, including past students and families. As our school song says “Rowville is our name, friendship is our fame, for the two-blue school is great, and a credit to our state.”
