Year 1
Hello families, we are so happy to share with you some of the exciting activities our Year 1 students have been engaging in during Term 4.
In Maths, we have been developing the strategies we use to solve problems that involve
sharing. We heard about a story of a farmer needing to share eggs equally between a group of people. To solve the problem, we used concrete materials and modelling with pictures to represent and tackle the problem. We found that when we gave one egg at a time, we were able to share all the eggs equally. Also, in Maths this term we’ve had a focus on measurement. We explored the mass of different objects in the classroom and learned new vocabulary such as heavy, heavier, heaviest, and light, lighter, lightest. In our exploration of mass, we tried hefting different materials with our hands to see which objects weigh more and which weigh less. We also used balance scales to compare the mass of different materials and ordered them from heaviest to lightest.
In Writing, we researched Australian animals including crocodiles and penguins and wrote Information Reports on them. We identified important information about our animals such as what they eat, their appearance, and the habitat they live in. We then wrote what we learned about them in short paragraphs using simple sentences.
In Reading, we have been exploring the meanings and teachings embedded in Dreamtime stories. We have learned that creation stories tell us about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, cultures, beliefs, and their connection to the environment. Through works such as ‘Tiddalik the Frog’, from the Gunnai Kurnai people of Gippsland, we learned the importance of sharing our natural resources. This story showed us the consequences of not caring for our water and had a positive message about working together for a common goal.
Finally in spelling we have been looking at the alternative spellings for long vowel sounds and the rules that apply when we are writing them. Through the Little Learners Love Literacy program, we looked at how we can segment a word into its sounds to read and write. So far, we have explored long a, e and i sounds and we are really excited to learn the long o, and u later this term.
We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made in Year 1, and we are excited for their learning during the rest of Term 4.
Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement.
