Year 11 Dampier Camp

Over the past three weeks Year 11 Cert II Sport and Recreation students have embarked on their Dampier Expedition in the Dampier Archipelago. Students navigate the islands in their own boats snorkelling, fishing and camping on the beaches. On top of being able to assess practical elements of their course, this is a great opportunity for students to challenge their own resilience and work as a team to complete the journey.

Year 7 Bush Dance

The annual Year 7 Bush Dance was held at Mercedes College on Thursday night. The night was imbued with an atmosphere of excitement as our Year 7 boys, with their enthusiastic spirits, adorned their best bush dance attire and stepped into a world of Australian culture and camaraderie. The stage was set with traditional decorations, and an awesome rustic ambiance, with students guided by professional instructors directing them through all the traditional dances.

The highlight of the evening was witnessing the students coming together, helping and encouraging one another as they navigated the steps and moves of the bush dance. It was heartwarming to see friendships being forged and the true TC spirit shining through. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the teachers, staff, and prefects from Mercedes for organising the event. The night went off without a hitch and the boys had ball. We look forward to sharing many more events with Mercedes College and the Class of 2028 in the future.

Perth Philosothon 2023

This week six Trinity boys had the opportunity to participate in the 2023 Perth Philosothon hosted at UWA. This involved the preparation of responses and critical thinking to topics provided to the boys in advance. Once we were at the event, the boys were split into different groups with a single representative from each of the 21 participating schools to engage in a round table philosophical conversation on the topics, including:

  • Is Australia still the King’s country?
  • Should Chat GPT be banned in schools?
  • Gamification - Is it just ‘clever’ marketing – or are there more sinister ideas at hand?
  • Do colours exist outside the brain?

Next, it was up to the boys to demonstrate creative thinking, leadership, and the ability to engage other in deep and meaningful conversations about the concepts in the topics. Our two Year 7 boys, Matteo Redolatti and Fred Brockett presented some logical statements which were informed by historical knowledge, while our other competitors, Lachlan Reid, Ashton Callus and Sebastion Foti also conducted themselves confidently in their respective rounds.

Finally, after some pizza ‘brain food’ it was time for the closing ceremony and awards. Our standout performer was Year 10 Westlee Terrell who came third amongst the Year 10 students, behind two female competitors, and took out the Miller and Tapper award for the highest scoring male competitor on the night. This is the highest award any individual male student can receive in the competition, and the only time a Trinity student has won it. Fantastic effort, Westlee!

While Miss Wilson had the immense privilege of spectating this event, a massive shout out goes to Donette Firkins for her continued support and organisation of the boys. As a college, we are sincerely grateful to have had to opportunity to share in her success alongside such a fantastic group of Trinity gentlemen. Well done, boys!

Year 8 English

Miss Wilson’s Year 8 class has been working hard on their Shakespearean Biography posters in English this week. This was a group activity that had the boys researching the significant life events and achievements of William Shakespeare in preparation for their study of Romeo and Juliet. As a class they learned that his achievement includes the publication of 37 plays and 149 sonnets with many being translated into different languages to expand the reach of his work on a global scale.

Some of the boys chose to give their Shakespeare a theme to engage readers and attract attention; this certainly worked with Miss Wilson’s Year 10 English class stepping in to judge the boys on aesthetics and information.

Year 7 Step-a-thon

Last week, on Friday afternoon the Year 7 cohort got their steps up for a cause close to the hearts of many at TC. The Class of 2028 took the stairs at the WACA for the annual Br Ollie Pickett, Wheelchair for Kids Step-a-thon. Boys were expected to walk for a minimum of 20 minutes, ‘climbing’ as many steps as they can in that time.

Wheelchairs for Kids is a voluntary organisation that raises funds to develop and build children’s rough terrain, completely adjustable wheelchairs with full support. These wheelchairs are donated and properly fitted to needy, disabled children in lesser resourced countries. We've raised a total of $1987.10 thus far. Great job, everyone!
