From the Principal

What a great week we have had.

This week we farewelled our Year 12 students. The students were very creative with their dress on Monday. The theme was, ‘dress who you would like to be when you are a grown up’. Then we shared a breakfast before we said our goodbyes at their final assembly on Tuesday.

Tuesday night was the Valedictory. More than 600 people celebrated with students and staff. It was a lovely night, with many hitting the dance floor before they made their way home.

All VCE-ATAR students should be using their time wisely, ensuring enough time is spent studying. For most, the exams will begin with the English exam, Tuesday 24th October.

This week also included the Year 7 and 8 showcase. Students were very proud to present work from Science and Humanities to their families. It was a great afternoon. Thankyou to everyone involved.

Middle School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am delighted to report that the Year 7 and 8 showcase was a hit!

Thank you so much for attending. The students were very excited about presenting their work as they stood proudly next to their Science and Humanities displays.

As the weather is warming up, it has been great to see our students sharing the oval playing soccer and football. Basketball and four square are still in high demand.

Some students are taking a long time to get to class. Being punctual is very important so students do not miss out on any learning. Any student who is late for class without a valid reason will be required to make up that time.

Parents and Guardians, thank you again for your support with our implementation of classroom practices and high expectations.

Wishing you a great week!

Senior School

To students and families of the Mornington Senior School,

In the ‘almost’ words of Eddie McGuire, "it’s been a big week in football (education)" at Mornington. Last Friday, our Year 10s had their formal and I’d like to commend the students on their behaviour and attitude. I spoke to the cohort on Wednesday and set them a challenge regarding behaviour on the night and they exceeded that challenge. The students who attended were a credit to themselves and represented Mornington well. There were quite a few students with sore feet at the end of the night! My thanks to the Year 10 team (Jake Uhlenberg, Jen Rolls and Alex Malligan) for their tireless work in setting up the event and to the many Mornington staff who gave up their Friday night after a busy week to attend the evening.

Our Year 12s have also finished classes for, well, forever! They had a dress up as your future career day for their last day of classes (a couple of students came dressed as bananas so that may a new career pathway I’m not aware of!) and then we ran a final whole school assembly in honour of the class of 2023. I’d like to publicly thank the Year 12s for their amazing behaviour during their celebration and then again at the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner which was held on Tuesday. Given some of thestories in the media around ‘muck up’ days in other schools, it is fantastic that we have a culture of celebration and respect at Mornington. Seeing the Year 12 students walk around the gym personally thanking their teachers for their work and support was a touching moment and shows the great relationships students and staff form with each other over their school journey. Long may it continue. I must also give a very public shout out to the Year 12 team for their work in organising two major events in one day. The Year 12 valedictory is effectively a 550-person wedding, while the final day celebrations are a significant undertaking by itself. Thank you to Scott Kirkby, Evangeline Romage and Victoria Milner – I hope you get some well-earned rest this weekend!

For our Year 11 cohort, they are approaching the conclusion of Unit 2. Congratulations to our new College Captains for 2024, Bridie Borthwick and Molly Pierce-Decker. I look forward to working with them and congratulations to everyone who took part in the College Captain application process. A lot of time, effort and mental energy went into the applications.

Kind regards,

Nick Evans

Senior School Assistant Principal

2024 All systems go!

Today your child will receive an email with their subjects for 2024. The classes students have been given represent our best efforts to give every student what they requested through the course counselling process. We would encourage students to go with the programs of study they have been given, however if student have changed their thoughts about their future pathway then the process for changing a subject is listed as part of the email.

This is a very exciting time as we look forward to the new year. But with exams just around the corner tis time for students to double down on their efforts and finish 2023 with an “Academic Bang”.

Kind regards,

Mike Parker

Assistant Principal

Year 10

Mr Jake Uhlenberg

Year 10 Formal was a phenomenal success last Friday. We, the Year 10 Team, would like to thank each and every student who attended and presented at their absolute best for making it a special evening that we hope they will remember for a long time.

We presented a number of awards on the night, some of which voted by the students and some chosen by the coordination team. Congratulations to all of our winners including Vili who was awarded Best Dressed in a salmon-pink suit that captured the attention of many.

We would also like to extend a big thank you to our photographer, Mackenzie, the Frankston Art's Centre, their team, chefs as well as our incredible DJ, photobooth technician who all played huge parts in ensuring the night was as memorable as possible.

Year 11

Dr Jasmine Keough

The Final Assembly for the current Year 12s on Tuesday had a large impact on our lovely Year 11 students. Firstly, they were allowed to sit on the blocks - the traditional space for the Year 12s. Before you know it….it will be their turn next year.

The focus now is to get into good habits of attendance, working hard and finishing tasks to prepare for their transition into Year 12.

Many of our Year 11 students are preparing for their VCE exams in their 3/4 subjects. Exams begin on the 24th of October.

Mary-Louise Wakefield has won the Award for the Frankston Mornington Peninsula Applied Learning Awards. The Awards ceremony is next week and Dr Keough and Ms Slater will be attending to support Mary-Louise.

Congratulations Mary-Louise!

Year 12

Mr Scott Kirkby

Celebration Day

Sending off the Year 12 cohort at the end of the year is one of mixed emotions for all. It is filled with pride, joy and a sense of sadness. It was superb to have our cohort back and on such wonderful behaviour. Having a day to enjoy together is what the time is all about. The students were treated to a big breakfast served by staff, a coffee van and a staff flash dance before they donned their sashes and headed down to their final whole school assembly. The assembly was a wonderful way to acknowledge their time at Mornington Secondary College and the final lap around the stadium allowed them to thank their teachers and have a final goodbye to the student body.

The final trip was to the performing arts centre for a student led assembly where the Year 12 captains put on a fun student led assembly for their peers. Videos and anecdotes were shared as well as laughter and tears.

Valedictory

A magnificent night was had by all at the Year 12 Valedictory. Inviting families and friends to gather to share a night to celebrate students is always something special. Valedictory is that little bit more special because it is our last time all together. We celebrated academic excellence, contributions to the school community and leaders within the cohort. Prizes and certificates were given and all the smiles lit up the room. The truly rewarding part for all of the staff are the conversations with families and students during the night. An opportunity to reflect on the year and connect as the team that supported the student through such a monumental achievement.

To the graduating class of 2023, I would like to say, congratulations and wish you well. We are always here for you if you need anything. Your success is our pride, so please keep us informed of what you are doing in the future.

Exams

Exams commence at Mornington Secondary College on Tuesday 24/10 with the English exam. Attached is the Mornington Secondary College running sheet of exams. All exams will take place in the R block, except for the General Maths exams 1 and 2 which will take place in the Robert Herbert Gymnasium.

I will publish exam seating plans the day prior to the exams on MS Teams. Students are responsible for checking this to be aware of their specific seat for the day. Please familiarise yourself with the VCAA examination rules and allowed materials for each exam.

We are looking forward to seeing our students achieve their personal best in the exam period and hope that they are applying themselves as best as they can to gain the results they desire.
