Sunsmart Expectations

Did you know 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with Skin Cancer by the age of 70? That is why skin protection is vital in childhood and adolescence.

We have now entered the Sunsmart period where all students and staff are required to wear hats that protect their face, neck and ears, i.e. legionnaire, broad brimmed or bucket hats, whenever they are outside. Baseball or peak caps and visors are not considered a suitable alternative. Hats are compulsory for all play breaks and outdoor lessons, including sport and Physical Education. As the weather heats up, we will be encouraging students to engage in Sunsmart behaviours including hat wearing, shade seeking and using sunscreen. Students must provide their own SPF 30 or higher broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen, if they wish to use protection whilst at school. Across next term, each year level will engage in compulsory lessons on UV exposure, skin cancer prevention, and vitamin D.

Student Mobile Phones

Recently we have had a significant drop in students handing in phones to the office and an increase in phones being misused during school time.  As part of the Ministerial Order, all students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored at the school administration office, during school hours. This is to ensure they are not used during school time and are also protected from going missing, being misplaced or being stolen from open bag and locker areas. Mobile phones owned by students at Aberfeldie Primary School are considered valuable items and are brought to school at the owner’s risk. Having these phones stored securely significantly reduces the risk of them being lost, misplaced or taken.

Action: If you're child is required to bring a mobile phone to school (all the time, or on occasion), please:

Any student using a mobile phone during school hours, or not handing in their phone, will receive consequences in line with our Digital Breach Agreement. This consequence is likely to be a loss of all technology privileges at school, including use of iPad's and laptops, until such time as the student can demonstrate the appropriate expected behaviours.

                             Book Week

A few weeks ago we celebrate Book Week at Aberfeldie Primary School by reading some of the shortlisted books and engaging in activities based around these texts. The kids had a great time listening to and responding to new stories. The week concluded with a dress up day where we had a parade and shared our costumes with each other.

Thank you to everyone for joining in on the fun and we hope that you enjoyed some new stories.
