To give a brief statement about the main points of the explanation text. 

Explanation text: 

A text that explains something. They might tell you how or why something happens, or give information on how to do something.

Give your child a newspaper or magazine article (or they read from a book they enjoy), and ask them to summarise the important parts of what they read.
