Retired - NOT
Former Chief Magistrate Michael Hill (SVC 1958-66) is one of a number of high-profile Tasmanians who have signed on to the national Justice Reform Initiative, along with the likes of former Governor of Tasmania Kate Warner, former Premier Lara Giddings, and former Greens Leader Christine Milne.
The initiative is releasing a report into what it claims is an over-reliance on incarceration in Tasmania, while urging the government to abandon the proposed Northern Correction Facility which is expected to be built on the Ashley Detention site.
To quote Michael in his article in The Mercury (12 August):
The Justice Reform Initiative, of which I am the patron, has released a report which proposed the redirecting the $270M committed to a new prison towards a Breaking the Cycle fund over four years which would bolster the capacity of community led programmes that are successfully reducing crime and recidivism. …………Tasmania can and should lead the nation when it comes to a smarter justice system. But we need to take the opportunity to change course towards the services that turn lives around, rather than continue to invest in a system that is failing.
