Monday August 7th saw both the Year 11 and 12 OES classes depart for their much awaited Rubicon Camp experience. After a thorough preparation involving visits from Rubicon Outdoor Leaders, it was finally time to “get the show on the road.” Whilst both classes would travel to the same venue, Rubicon Outdoor Centre in Thornton (near Eildon), they would be undertaking vastly differing programs throughout the week.
Arriving at ROC at lunchtime on Monday, the 12s immediately began the process of packing gear for a three day journey which took them XC skiing and bushwalking at Lake Mountain and Rafting the Big River in inflatable Kayaks (I2K’s).
Whilst the snow at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort limited our XC skiing to the short slopes in the village, we got to see the operation of the Village and the effects of climate change and the management strategies employed by the Village Management and Parks Victoria Rangers. Our overnight campsite offered scenic views and virtual refrigeration for any food left outside. Yes, it took us a while to get up and get going on Wednesday morning after brushing the ice from our tents.
We spent the morning with the Lake Mountain Environment Officer (Alex) who showcased her work and the problems they face keeping the environmental management of the Alpine Resort in balance with economic expectations. From there we drove to the Big River State Forest to camp before rafting Big River on Thursday. The 12s had a great night around the campfire in a “warmer” environment and the horror stories probably kept some awake.
Thursday’s rafting was a highlight with some boats negotiating the rapids with more grace than others and some paddlers becoming “swimmers”. After we exited the Big River, it was back to ROC to return gear, shower and revise for our SAC on Friday morning.
The Year 11's program was based at Rubicon with 2 groups undertaking similar activities on a series of day trips while being based at ROC.
Thanks to the wonderful Rubicon Group Leaders, activity staff AND the chefs for a magnificent week.
Thanks also to the DHS staff for their efforts throughout the week to ensure each student had fun and enjoyed their experience whilst remaining safe. Thanks to Mrs Buckland, Mr Sitnai and Mr Anderson.
Well done, team!
