Senior Basketball

After their amazing performance at the previous competition - winning all of their games, our Senior Basketball team moved to the next level at Dandenong Stadium on Monday, 21st August.

Their skills on the court were remarkable and our talented basketballers worked brilliantly as a team. They won one of their games, but unfortunately were unsuccessful on the day in moving ahead in the competition. Their coach, Mr Matthews, reported that it was an "amazing effort by this group. [They] played undersized all day and did the college proud". We are, indeed, extremely proud of all of the accomplishments of this great team and look forward to their future matches!

Intermediate Basketball

Congratulations to our Intermediate Basketballers who won the competition last week at Cardinia Life.  They won all five of their games convincingly, and their behaviour both on and off the court was exceptional. All of the teams worked hard throughout the day and their perseverance and determination was evident.  Our basketballers should be proud of their achievements, as we are of them.

Basketball Helpers

We would also like to thank the fabulous basketball helpers who attended the recent Intermediate and Senior basketball events. Their support at the venues was invaluable and they were a credit to the College.

A Chess Star in the Making

Pakenham Secondary College has an established and popular Chess Club, with many talented students who have honed their skills under the tutelage of our wonderful teachers; Mr De Lima (our Chess Club Coordinator) and Mr Ampongan, who give up their recess and lunch each day to mentor our Chess team.

One of these players, Sinsarut ‘Q’ Chitkanwong, started playing chess last year and was given a chess rating of around 700 (which is common for new players). Over the first few months, Q’s rating dipped to 100, as he lost quite a few games. Through his perseverance and resilience, his rating started to climb. According to Mr De Lima, “one reason for this could be that Q always wanted to play the tough chess players; the senior players, who had more experience and were rated much higher than him”. As of today, Qs chess rating is at 1795! Mr De Lima, further mentioned that Q’s current rating is the “highest he has seen in the 10 years that he has been running the club”.

According to Chess.com a player with a rating of 1800 is considered an ‘A’ player, a strong Club player. If a player reaches 2000 they are considered ‘Expert Level’ – “an extremely strong, consistent player with the possibility of achieving Master rating, may have real talent.”

Q's goal is to reach Master level before he leaves Pakenham Secondary College. Considering that Q is in Year 9, this is highly attainable as he is only 405 points away from a Master rating.

Some of the junior chess players feel nervous when they see that they will be playing Q, but Mr De Lima tells them how important it is to play other chess players who are better than them, because this is how they will improve, just as Q has. With this attitude we are sure to see many more students at Q’s level before too long.

We wish Q and all of the students competing in the upcoming Chess Tournaments all the best.

Music Virtuosos at PSC

On Friday, 25th August, five of our talented student musicians performed in front of their peers and staff at a lunchtime concert in the Performing Arts building.

With nerves of steel, the students performed beautifully to great applause from the audience.

We look forward to many more concerts from these gifted students:
