Junior Report (1/2)

Wominjeka from the BLOSSOM COMMUNITY - Jordan, Eda, Amber, Ashley, Kat &  Sharon

Emotional Growth

The Junior Learning Community have been learning about emotions. Emotions help us understand how we are feeling, and it's okay to have different feelings. Our students have made big strides in recognising emotions in their peers and use strategies to help them, for example giving them space or using reassuring language. Students are learning to recognise the feelings in their own bodies and how it affects their ability to learn.

They have connected this to the Zones of Regulation and use the language of colour to articulate their feelings. The Zones of Regulation are like a map that guides us through our feelings, like our new furry STEM friends helping us in the Blue Zone or engaging in hands-on activities to help us stay in the Green Zone.

Floor Friends

The Junior Learning Community has been using Floor Friends to grow their interpersonal skills. They have been asked to follow a routine that assists in scaffolding turn-taking, listening, and sharing their opinions and feelings. This has allowed them to connect with a wide range of their classmates. Differing thoughts and opinions help challenge thinking and provoke rich classroom discussions.

Emotional Literacy

Self-awareness as a student starts with recognising and understanding your own thoughts, feelings, strengths, areas of improvement and learning style. Students have been reflecting on the signals their body sends them throughout the day and what 'ready for learning' looks like for them. As we continue to practice emotional literacy, students become more in tune with what they are feeling and how that may affect their ability to learn. For example, understanding what happens when they are hungry, thirsty, too hot or too cold, the impact of noise and visuals in the classroom, seating choice, etc.

Kids' Voice

Students have proudly worked towards achieving set goals, challenging themselves with a 'can do' attitude and building new positive friendships. We asked our students about what they are looking forward to next year and ways that we, as teachers, can help them feel ready.
