Explore the Learning in Grade 5
It's been a busy term for our grade 5 students who have been working hard across all areas.
Reading
This term in Reading we have been using mentor texts to explore the various ways in which authors use vocabulary in their writing and understanding what the words mean. We have also been analysing texts by asking questions and making connections to ourselves, other texts and the world around us. The students have been really enjoying working in small groups in book clubs and coming together to look deeper into the text by having a conversation with fellow readers to gain more insights into the plot of their stories.
Writing
In Writing this term the grade 5 students have been investigating how to write persuasive texts with strong persuasive abilities, using a variety of different persuasive devices such as repetition, facts, power of three and rhetorical questions. Students used this knowledge to draft and publish a persuasive text for their business plans.
Maths
In Maths this term, our students have learnt and refined their skills with using multiplication and division strategies. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow in this area as they have found the strategy that works best for them. They have also looking at chance and probability, and had tons of fun using cards, marbles, dice and coloured spinners to conduct chance experiments. We have also learnt about financial maths, where students have created budgets and financial plans. In the last two weeks of term we will be looking at using am and pm notations in time, converting between 12 and 24 hour time and solving time problems.
How could you continue this learning at home?
Inquiry
This term in Inquiry students have been learning about Business and Economics. We have research information about where products come from and the environmental impact product production can have. They have been working on designing their own product or service that provides a solution to an everyday problem. Students have designed their product and are in the process of building their prototype. They have thought of some incredible ideas and look forward to sharing them with their parents, carers and families during their expo in week 10.
