Staughton Sports Update
Junior Boys Netball
The Junior Boys (Year 7 & 8 combined) Netball Team went along to the first ever all boys netball tournament on 20 July this term, held at Cobblebank Stadium. While the boys didn’t get the choccies, they had a great day and really grew as a team as the day went on, coming 2nd in their pool. The first game was against a red-hot Gisborne who, having already played a solid warm up game against Kurunjang (keeping them scoreless), made it a difficult first up game. The team did really well, scoring multiple goals every quarter as they worked out how to play together as a team. They carried this synergy and confidence into the second game against Kurunjang where, after a close first half, had a huge third quarter and put the game to bed. Ben Castro showed his basketball skills aren’t just for show, which was recognised by his teammates when he was voted Player’s Player for the day. Everyone in the team played in multiple positions over the day, and it was in defence that the boy’s efforts really shined, constantly intercepting passes and setting up offensive plays. This willingness to give their all was highlighted by Goldmyer Hamilton’s complete dedication to try and keep a loose ball in, sprinting across the defensive third and launching himself at the ball to try and hit it back to a teammate. The ball stopped just over the line, however Hamilton kept sliding for another 5m - stopping just short of the arena wall. This didn’t phase him in the slightest and he sprung back to his feet, massive grin on his face, and sprinted straight back to his opponent to do it all over again. Overall, it was a great day and everyone had fun - the win against Kurunjang was the icing on the cake.

Girls Soccer
The year 9 and 10 girls Soccer team went to Keilor Park on the 26th of July to play 4 amazing back to back soccer games against some other competitive schools in the area. Mr Cini brought the team to 3 victories with a loss in their final game, a truly great day overall. Game 1 was a smashing win with 6-2 against Williamstown High School. Makerita Seinafolova in particular had an outstanding game bringing her team to victory, as well as being top scorer of the day with 6 goals! With only a 5 minute rest break, the girls followed this with a close win against Wyndham Secondary College with a score of 1-0. Lastly Geelong High school came in fighting but the girls walked away with a win once again, 4-1. Despite their hard work and determination, the girls came up short in their final game against Maribyrnong college, an extremely competitive sports academy that walked away with the win, 4-1. Special mention to Akuol Bol who scored the freekick goal in the final. Students Ciara and Angel were also complimented for their amazing defence throughout the whole day. With this, the girls finished 2nd in the region, just short of moving on to the next round. Overall, a great day with a great team that made Staughton proud!
Senior Boys Soccer
The Senior (Year 11 and 12) Boys went to Caroline Springs to compete in inter school soccer. Sadly they didn’t make it to the next round despite tying 4-4 in their first game and 1 even in their second game. A special mention to Madiar Chipuowuop being player of the day! Thank you to Mr Deng and Mr Simonovski for taking the boys out for a day that they said was great for team bonding as well as a sneaky McDonalds trip.
Under 16’s Girls Rugby League
On the 10th of August 2023 both girls and boys Under 16’s rugby league teams went to Seabrook Reserve, Broadmeadows to play against other secondary schools. For the boys superversion was Mr Daryl Nayler and for the girls was Mr Ben Russell who both did an amazing job coaching and supporting the players throughout the whole day. The girls first game was against Melton Secondary College where we won 12-0. The second game was Tarneit where we won our second game, 12-4, followed by our third game where we won against Craigieburn, 18-0. I would like to give a special mention to my vice-captain Gabby Vaka for her neverending support that was shown, and also Makarita and Kavangia for their unbelievable skills and ball handling that was not going unnoticed each game. Since winning all three games, the under 16 girls will be going to state finals later this term. I would like to say how proud I am for everyone who contributed on that day, each and every girl who stepped foot on that field proudly representing Staughton College.
Thank you,
Ruci
