YEAR 7
Year 7 Key Information:
- At St Mary’s, we aim to uphold the dignity of ourselves and others with our conduct, specifically being an upstander by speaking up or reporting incidents where a student has been harmed or is made to feel unsafe at school. In a recent Community PG, I addressed the students around my concerns with the term ‘snitching’ (dobbing), highlighting that if this term is being directed at them, then the person or people using it are likely concerned about being held accountable for their actions. As members of the St Mary’s community, we all have a responsibility to act in ways that strengthen our connections, build trust, and call out behaviours that go against our values. These are challenging but important lessons for our Year 7s to learn. With your support, we will continue to work to ensure that incidents at school are addressed with empathy and accountability.
- We are having increasing issues regarding student belongings; please speak to your child about being responsible for their things at school in the following ways:
- Lockers must be secured with a working lock and codes kept private to ensure safe and appropriate storage of valuable items.
- Bags should be zipped up and placed above or below lockers or on the bag racks.
- Laptops should be carried in their Laptop bags.
- Hats, lunch boxes, water bottles, and other belongings should be clearly named.
- Several items of lost property from camp, including clothes, towels, and shoes, can be collected from outside Student Reception. Please send your child to check if you feel they may be missing something.

PUPIL FREE DAY
Pupil Free Day: Friday, August 30.
The College office will remain open from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.
LAPTOP USE AT HOME
We encourage parents/carers to monitor the use of student laptop use at home. Please see some helpful tips below:
Laptops should be used in a common area at home in view of parents/carers for school work and personal use.
Provide timelines for accessing the laptop: Homework should be completed within 1 – 2 hours in the junior school.
The student laptop should be charged in a common area overnight in preparation for school the following day.
Should parents/carers require additional support regarding their child's laptop use at home, please contact their Head of Year. We have some great support we can provide families with this process.
Week 8 Uniform Schedule & Reminders
From Week 8 until the end of term, Year 8 will wear their formal uniform every day except Wednesday sport.
Year 10 students will attend the Cairns Youth & Careers Expo on Thursday. Students are required to wear their formal uniform to the excursion. 10HMS must bring their sport uniform on this day and change when they return.
WATER PARENT RETREAT
Saturday, 7 September, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
The Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns Identity and Outreach Directorate seeks to build a supportive faith community where the parents of children in our schools can participate. In supporting families to develop their capacity to nurture the faith and spirituality of their children, the Catholic school participates in the evangelising mission of the Church as a community of faith (NCEC, 2023).’
A parent retreat allows parents and caregivers to be introduced into active participation in the Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns faith community. The retreat is intended to be informal, providing a day of spiritual reflection, participation and collaboration for parents who attend.
