Food Ethics and Sustainable Living

Our VCE Food Studies class has been studying food ethics and sustainable living. During a recent practical class, students had the opportunity to bake chocolate brownies using a variety of sustainably sourced products, including local, free-range eggs and Fair-Trade chocolate.

As part of the unit, students considered what factors influence people when purchasing food and the role social issues, cultural and religious expectations and financial pressures play when making those choices. Additionally, other important components to consider were; where our food is grown and the distance it travels to consumers, and the effect growing the food has had on the natural environment.

The topic has helped enlighten students about the different options available and how minor changes to the items we purchase and the foods we consume can have a lasting impact.
