Numeracy

Maths with Mr. Bigger

With the Olympics happening in Paris, it is great opportunity to discuss mathematics at home. There are so many things to discuss from time, decimals, ordinal numbers and more.

Here are just some ideas of the conversation starters you could have with your child:

  • Time: Who won? By how much? What does tenth of a second mean?
  • Decimals: What score did they receive? How far from a perfect score were they?
  • Ordinal numbers: Who came first? What does it mean if they finished number 8?
  • Measurement: Why do some runners start further up the track and why are some runners further away? How many laps of the track would they need to do to run 2km? How many laps of the pool to swim 400m?
  • Statistics: What percentage of Australia’s medals are gold?
