Book Week fun!
It was incredible to see so many students and staff dressed up to celebrate Book Week. There was definitely an air of excitement across the school that day as everyone shared their favourite books and characters. I must admit, I struggle to just limit myself to one favourite book!
I read an interesting quote recently which said, 'The single biggest predictor of high academic achievement is reading to children. Not flash cards, not workbooks, not fancy preschools, not blinking toys or computers, but Mum or Dad taking the time every day or night (or both) to sit and read them wonderful books.'
Life is busy and there are a lot of challenges but helping your child do well at school is as simple as spending time together reading. Reading at the end of the day when my girls were little was my favourite part of each day.
Lalor Secondary visit
On Friday I had the opportunity to visit Lalor Secondary with some local Principals and the local Member for Thomastown, Bronwyn Halfpenny, to view their $30 million renovations. The works included refurbishing the 3 storey building you can see from Dalton Road to create wonderful new spaces for library, the arts, wellbeing, Phys/Ed, classroom and study areas for year 11-12 students. I also enjoyed chatting to some of our former students and it is fantastic to hear they are doing well and will have access to the wonderful new facilities.
Future Foundation Art Program
On Saturday I had the opportunity to visit the school and see first hand the students chosen for the Future Foundation Art Program. The students are still in the early stages of the program and are currently experimenting with different art techniques and planning their art pieces. I can't wait to see the pieces once they are completed!
Happy Father's Day
Whether you are a father, step-father, big brother, uncle, grandfather or someone who is an 'adopted' father figure, know that you play an important role in children's lives and can help to set them up for future success. Wishing all the 'father figures' in our community a very Happy Father's Day for Sunday 1 September. We hope your little treasures managed to keep their Father's Day stall gifts a secret until the big day!
