Information Reports
LS3 Juniors are currently researching animals and composing information reports in the writing hour.
In Clinic 1 we have been expressing our ideas aloud and hearing and recording the sounds we say when writing.
Clinic 2 writers have been recording their ideas and grouping information under sub headings such as appearance, diet and habitat.
Our Clinic 3 writers have been working on adding technical language and organising information into paragraphs in their information reports.

MENTAL MATHS STRATEGIES AT SFS - TERM 3
The strategies children have been focusing on over the last two weeks are:
YEAR LEVEL | STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME |
Foundation |
Subitising in the range 1 -10 (using dice or dominoes)
What is subitising? Subitising is when you are able to look at a group of objects and realise how many there are without counting. This only works with small groups of numbers and we normally go no further than 10. This is common with objects on dice or dominoes and even a tens frame, where we are so familiar with the arrangement of numbers that just by looking at the objects we know how many there are.
At home, you can do this if you have dice or dominoes or by even representing a number to 10 with materials (e.g. pasta, counters, lego pieces etc.) and asking your child to quickly identify the number represented. They should not have time to count the objects – it is all about visual recognition.
|
Year 1 |
Skip counting by 2s, 5s & 10s. This is a great strategy to practice at home. Simply ask your child to start skip counting by 2,5 or 10 starting from zero and see how far they can go. Can they make it to 100!! Challenge: can they skip counting starting from a different number e.g. start at 3 and count by 2s.
|
Year 2 |
Partitions of 11-19. -What numbers when combined make any of the numbers between 11-19. Can you record all the combinations in 2 minutes or say them out aloud as fast as you can?
|
Year 3 |
Adding without regrouping Practice mentally adding whole numbers that don’t involve regrouping (that is trading across place value units). Children should use either the jump or split strategy to solve equations, which requires them to draw on their knowledge of place value, partition and part-part whole relationships. Example: 37 + 22 Jump: Think: 37 + 10 +10 + 2 Split: Think: 30 + 20 + 7 + 2
|
Year 4 & 5 |
Halving Strategy (Division). Using the halving strategy makes dividing by even numbers easier. It can be easier if you split the number you are dividing in half. Another way of saying this is dividing by 2. To turn this into dividing by 4, just split each half in half again. So what you are doing is dividing by 2 and then dividing by 2 again. Example: 32 divided by 4 =8 I can halve 32 which is 16 and then halve 4 which is 2. These numbers are easier to work with so 16 divided by 2 = 8.
|
Year 6 |
Count by decimals from any number Once again this strategy can be practiced anywhere, anytime and only takes 1 minute of your time each day. Give children a decimal number e.g. 0.5 and then asked them to count forwards or backwards by decimals (e.g. by 0.5 so 0.5, 1, 1.5 and so on.

GRADE 5/6 INTER-SCHOOL SPORT
Today, our Grade 5/6 students competed against St. Kevin’s Primary School. They demonstrated exceptional performance and sportsmanship in their respective sports. Our Girls' basketball teams secured victories, remaining unbeaten and leading the standings. Additionally, our AFL team is also at the top of the ladder and takes great pride in their accomplishment. Congratulations to all our Grade 5/6 students for their competitiveness and respect shown towards their peers.
GIRLS SOCCER TEAM
The girls' soccer team participated in the Regional Soccer event at Melbourne City Soccer Fields in Cranbourne on Monday. This marks a historic achievement for St. Francis, as it is the first time a team has reached this level of competition, and we take great pride in each member of the team. The girls exhibited happiness and enthusiasm throughout their journey to the venue. Their energy and unwavering determination were apparent from the beginning to the conclusion of the day.
The initial match proved to be challenging as the opposing team consisted entirely of players who had experience in playing soccer. Consequently, we found ourselves at a disadvantage. Nevertheless, it was encouraging to witness their competitive spirit and sportsmanship, and our girls maintained their smiles throughout the game.
The weather was pleasantly warm as they engaged in one game after another, yet they remained undeterred. The playing field was larger than what they were accustomed to, but they continued to run and attentively follow instructions, all while wearing smiles. After two games, the girls had not secured a victory, but they nonetheless enjoyed themselves immensely.
I would like to express my gratitude to Sadie F's grandfather for his assistance with coaching on that day. His support is greatly appreciated, and I am confident that the girls not only enjoyed the experience but also gained valuable insights into positioning on the soccer field.
CASEY NETBALL PRIMARY SCHOOL TOURNAMENT
Our Netball Mixed and Girls team competed in the Casey Netball Primary School Tournament on Tuesday at the Casey Indoor Stadium. It was a round robin tournament playing against other schools. Everyone had an enjoyable time regardless of the result. The students were put in two mixed teams.
There were 20 schools with a total of 59 entries. All sections have grown by numbers looking at roughly 590 students attending, which is just fantastic.
Thank you to Melody in coaching the teams every week during lunchtime and also to Courtney (Zoe’s mum) for turning up on Friday’s at Inter-school Sport and assisting in coaching.
DISTRICT ATHLETICS
A total of 36 students were selected to join the St. Francis De Sales Athletics Team. Their enthusiasm to compete against fellow students for a place on the District Athletics Team was clearly visible. Trials took place throughout Term 2, specifically on Thursday afternoons. Once they secured their positions on the team, their joy was unmistakable.
Training sessions were conducted weekly throughout Term 3, culminating in the event on Wednesday, August 21st, where our students competed against other schools in the district at the Casey Fields Athletics Track in Cranbourne.
For some participants, this was their inaugural competition, and they exhibited a mix of excitement and nervousness. I was stationed at the score table, and those students who received ribbons for their placements expressed great satisfaction with their accomplishments. Although I endeavoured to contain my enthusiasm, there were moments when it was simply unavoidable. Regardless of whether they secured First, Second, or Third place, the paramount lesson was to relish the experience, and I am confident that each student did just that. Congratulations to all our students!
St. Francis De Sales Primary School achieved an impressive Third place overall, competing against ten schools in our district. Well done, and let us commend their dedication and perseverance in giving their best effort.

SPORTING SCHOOLS – VOLLEYBALL CLINICS
This week was the second volleyball clinic. Ann and Josh from DS Sports came to SFS to run the clinics. The students had a great time. They have been exposed to a new sport, learning basic skills in volleyball such as volleying and setting. We hope that perhaps there may be some students that enjoy volleyball and would like to continue it after school as part of a club.
We are excited to be able to offer our students so many extra curricula activities.
Please ensure your child is wearing their sports uniform and brings their drink bottle on the following days:
Week 7
Monday August 26th LS1 & LS3 TB
No Friday clinics due to Father’s Day Stall.
Week 8
Friday September 6th LS2 & LS3 RI
Week 9

WHOLE SCHOOL SPORTING EVENTS
SFS AUSKICK CENTRE – TERM 3
Our Auskick Centre at SFS had their fourth clinic on Wednesday August 21st from 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm. Students once again had a great time at their clinic, learning how to hand pass, kick and other skills. Thanks to Tyler and our other AFL coaches, both students and parents enjoyed the various activities.
Next week will be the last Auskick clinic. Once again we hope students have enjoyed the extra curricula activities we have organised. I wonder what sport we’ll have next term??
If you have not yet registered your child there is still time to register. One clinic left. Please use the QR code attached to register your child and the discount code for a $10 discount.
Parents please note that you must take students to the after school clinics and remain there for the duration of the clinic unless your child is enrolled at Kharisma. We have worked out a process for students to attend from Kharisma Kids and then return to after school care.

SENIOR SPORTS
Casey Netball Tournament
Casey Netball Association held their annual School Tournament, where 20 schools with 59 teams and over 590 students competed. SFS-1 came fourth and SFS-2 came fifth in their respective Mixed Groups.
Courtney and Tristan (our parent helpers), Andriana and myself are beyond proud of every single student. They gave everything they had and kept smiling, while still pushing themselves to reach their personal best.
They gave up their lunchtimes to train each week with me and I thank them for their commitment. Netball is a team sport and together we made a great team!
