STUDENT ACTIVITIES

🧪Prep Science Incursion🧪

All the Preps were very excited to meet Rory, the Scientist from Happy Kidz. There was so much to see and learn about. Our Inquiry theme has been around the ‘Wonder of Weather’. We watched Rory show us chemical reactions, use fire, water, detergent, dry ice and so much more! It was interactive and the students were able to experience being a part of the scientific wonderings! What a fabulous morning 😄

📚🗣️Interschool Debating Comp Grade 5🗣️📚

Recently, 12 selected Grade 5 students participated in debating training with the Debating Association of Victoria. During this, they learned about manner, method and matter, as well as constructing arguments and rebuttals.

Over the next week, students worked to prepare for two known debates and one secret topic debate. On Monday 12th August, the three teams headed to Geelong Lutheran College to compete in debates against many schools from the Geelong and Western Melbourne region.

We were the only Grade 5s there, competing against Grade 6s all day, many of whom had learned these skills across the year. Our students were brilliant, resilient, adapted to feedback and improved throughout the day. They worked collaboratively and were supportive of one another.

Although we only had one win for the day, it wasn’t about winning for us – it was about the learning experience and how it strengthened our Literacy skills and our confidence to try something new.

Congratulations to Annabeth, Sienna, Landon, Angus, Liam, Alexia, Olivia, Emmett, Alek, Ian, Isla and Olivia for their great effort on the day. Special mention to Landon who received a ‘best speaker’ award and an honourable mention also, to Alexia for receiving a best speaker award in the secret topic. Special thank you to Alexander from Debating Association of Victoria for his great teaching. Also, to Mrs Jeffreys and Miss Brown for organising the day and supporting us.

📚🗣️Debating Competition Grade 6 – Round 2🗣️📚

On the afternoon of Wednesday 7th August, both of our Chilwell debating teams travelled to Bellaire Primary School to debate the topic, That Plastic Bottles Should Be Banned. Chilwell A argued for the negative against Bellaire A and Chilwell B argued for the affirmative against Bellaire B.

Monica (1st speaker), Sean (2nd speaker), Caitlin (3rd speaker) and Ari presented a strong case for Chilwell A and won the debate convincingly, with best speaker awarded to Caitlin. Aairah (1st speaker), Chase (2nd speaker), Eva (3rd speaker) and Leo did a fabulous job for Chilwell B and also won their debate, with best speaker awarded to Aairah.

Our Chilwell debaters impressed the adjudicators with their well-researched matter, confident manner and effective method to produce persuasive and polished speeches. There was plenty of rebuttal, which is always a good sign that teams are attempting to interact with one another to topple the opposition’s case and defend theirs. Well done to the debaters on their preparation and delivery of a challenging topic. It’s not always easy to passionately argue for a position that you don’t hold to be true!

We are looking forward to Round 3 next week. This will be the first of two unprepared rounds, where students will only have 30 minutes to prepare their speeches. Impromptu rounds are fun but challenging. Although they may be pushed out of their comfort zone, it is a good experience for students to try and stay composed and think on their feet under pressure. Good luck to both teams as we head to Christian College Surf Coast next Wednesday afternoon!

🥔🏅Potato Olympics🏅🥔

On Friday 9th August Grade 4 students helped their spud athletes compete in the Potato Olympic Games. The sports they competed in were diving, distance, gymnastics and breaking.

It was a bright and sunny day and our potato athletes were ready to start the 2024 Olympic opening ceremony. The potatoes paraded around the asphalt to the tune of their countries national anthem.

In the distance event we rolled our potatoes down a ramp and measured how far they rolled. In the gymnastics even we balanced on a pile of sticks and slowly took the sticks out like Jenga.

In the diving event the potatoes were dropped into a bucket full of water and we measured the amount of water that tipped out. The final event was breaking where we spun our potatoes and timed how long they spun for.

👟🏃District Athletics🏃👟

On Wednesday 7th August we had District Athletics, which was a ripper day. We all had fun and tried our best. Lots of people got through to the next round of Athletics, which is great. Unfortunately, the bus driver went to Myers Reserve so some people were a bit late to their event, but they still made it in time to compete.

Congratulations to all the people who took part. Thank you to Miss V for organising!

Thank you

Gracie, Gigi, and Amelie (Grade 4)

Winners are grinners!!!
