Celebrations of Learning
You are invited to attend our Science Afternoon!
Wednesday the 28th of August from 2.30-3.00pm
Please see below for details.
Year Level | What is our focus? | Where? | What are we sharing? |
Foundation | We are focusing on making predictions and talking about our observations. | Our classrooms: FA - Rm 11 FB - Rm 9 | The Foundation students invite their families to engage in an exciting Science experiment called ‘Wizard’s Brew’. We will mix some ingredients together to make a colourful and bubbling explosion!
|
Year 1 | We are focusing on how ingredients can change and why ingredients can be hot or cold. | Our classrooms: 1A- Rm 13 1B- Rm 12
| The year 1 students invite their families to participate in a science experiment where we will attempt to make ice-cream using chemistry. We will investigate how and why ingredients change.
|
Year 2
| We are learning about what happens when a cloud is full of water. | Our classrooms: 2A- Rm 17 2B- Rm 14 2C- Rm 15 | The Year 2 students invite their families to participate in a science experiment where we look at making a rain cloud in a jar!
|
Year 3 | We are learning about how and why ingredients react when mixed together.
| Our classrooms: 3A - Rm 22 3B - Rm 19 3C - Rm 18 | The Year 3 students invite their families to participate in an investigative science experiment. We will mix certain ingredients together, and observe the incredible explosion take place. Afterwards, students will record and explain their findings.
|
Year 4 | We are learning to collaborate using our materials and forces knowledge to design and build a protective structure that can prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from a height.
| Our classrooms: 4A - Rm 7 4B - Rm 6 4C - Rm 5 | The Year 4 students invite their families to join in their 'Egg Drop' design challenge. After planning a design of a suitable protective structure using our knowledge developed from our recent Properties of Materials Science unit of work, students invite their families to assist in the building and watch the testing of our designs. It's sure to be an 'eggciting' session!
|
Year 5 | We are learning how different forces react | Our classrooms: 5A- Rm 4 5B- Rm 3 5C- Rm 1 | The Year 5 students invite their families to participate in a refreshing, fruity surprise to make a drink even more delicious!!! After heating agar and fruit juice, we will spill drops of it into cold oil. As the juice mixture hits the oil, it will form a spherical shape due to the balance of forces. Due to gravity and the juice mixture being mainly water (which has a higher density) it will fall through the oil without mixing. Finally, we will rinse the oil off and add our results to a drink. What? What does this mean? .... we are making POPPING PEARLS!
|
Year 6 | We are learning about how ingredients can react and change when you mix them together. | Our classrooms: 6A- Rm 21 6B- Rm 23 6C- Rm 18 | The Year 6 students invite their families to participate in a science experiment. We will explode a bag by creating a chemical reaction between ALL states of matter. Don't stand too close!

Preschool Storytime
PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DAY- now held on Wednesday's
NO STORYTIME ON WEDNESDAY THE 28TH OF AUGUST
Storytimeis a literacy-based program that can help prepare pre-school aged children for learning by developing their listening, speaking, and pre-reading skills. There is a focus on developing important social skills including the sharing of resources, as well as the activities specifically designed to improve the fine-motor skills of young children. Storytime sessions are held at Deer Park West Primary School each week on Wednesday afternoons.
What to expect in a typical Storytime session:
On arrival, children will have an opportunity to work on various puzzles or construction tasks, or to sit & share a book or two with their parent or guardian.
We will then come together as a group to listen to a story that will be read-aloud to the children by one of our experienced teachers - Mrs. Sharon McLeod.
Each Storytime session will include a paper-craft or drawing activity for the children to complete, based on the book that was shared that week. If you have a preschool aged child with a sibling at Deer Park West Primary School or if you know someone who is planning to enrol a child at DPWPS to start in Foundation in 2025, we invite them to come along and join in the fun!
