Year 5/6
Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. As students complete a book, they are to record the author, title and date of finishing in their Reader’s Workshop book. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: Continue working on general multiplication skills and number facts.
Dress up day and Ping-pong-a-thon: This Friday (tomorrow) is sporting or casual clothes day. If you are able to donate a gold coin, the money will go to the ping-pong-a-thon. Ping-pong-a-thon is about freeing children from slavery around the world. Students will also participate in playing ping pong throughout the day and are invited to continue playing after school if supervised by a parent. All money raised goes to beating child slavery.
Book Week: Our Book Week dress up day is being held on Monday. We encourage all students to celebrate the wonder and enjoyment of books! We can’t wait to see Mr Napier’s costume!
SACSA Football: Students who would like to take part in the SACSA football will need to fill out their name on the sheet outside Mrs Zadow’s room. We will start tryouts once netball has been completed.
SACSA Netball: Students who are participating in SACSA netball will be out of class on Tuesday. All students remaining at school will be working together in Mr Napier’s room for the day. Please ensure netballers are ready to leave school at 8am and all forms need to be returned asap. We are still seeking a scorer for the boys’ team please. Please contact Jayne if you can help.
Year 6 Graduation: We would like to share a photo gallery of the graduating class on graduation night. We need 2 photos of your child to show how they have grown up into the students we know today. These photos can be emailed to Ms. Neumann (neumann.lauren@goldengrove.sa.edu.au). Please include a baby photo and first day of school photo. Please have these in by the end of Term 3.
Current and Upcoming Learning
Christian Studies: Our unit focus is, ‘Students develop skills to examine the scriptures and analyse its cultural and historical contexts’. We are initially focusing on the Bible and its textual features. Students have chosen a book of the bible and are looking into why it was written and who the author was.
Unit Of Inquiry: We have begun our ‘How we Organise Ourselves’ government unit. Students enjoyed seeing Parliament House and were very knowledgeable participants. Since then, we have looked at State Government spending and surveyed students about what they thought was the most important area for governments to spend in. If parents could do the 60 second survey, we can compare and graph results in class.

Literacy: To connect with our government unit, we will be looking at persuasive texts and debating.
Mathematics: Students have continued their unit on fractions. We have looked at different types of fractions that they can make and are thinking about how to order fractions.
