Level 6

Writing

Students have been exploring different types of texts, with a focus on informative texts, and examining the structure and features of an information report. They have also analysed the structures of persuasive and procedural texts using a 'thinking routine,' which assisted them in making their thought process visible.

This week, students will continue to focus on the features of an information report and learn how to structure a paragraph using the TEEL paragraph method as they work on writing their own informative piece.

Reading

Through various thinking routines such as "Look, See, Wonder," "Zooming Out," and "Ten Times Two," students have explored mapping by examining both historical and modern maps of North America and other countries. While learning to decode information in maps, they have been encouraged to observe and identify all the elements within each map and its accompanying text before comparing and synthesizing the information.

This week, students will focus on identifying the main idea in a variety of texts and images and how to summarise the information using key vocabulary and ideas from the text.

Maths

In Maths, students have been focusing on statistics by developing and conducting a survey using a 3- or 5-point scale, ranging from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree." They tallied the results and recorded the data in various formats. Students compared dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots and scatter plots with bar and column graphs to determine which type of graph best represented their data and why.

This week, students have been studying the order of operations to solve multi-step equations using BIDMAS. They will continue to build on this knowledge by incorporating the use of indices and factorials.

 Book Week

As part of Book Week, students celebrated everything related to books by reading and enjoying some of this year's shortlisted children's titles, as well as dressing up as their favourite book characters. They were also honoured to be visited by Australian author Crystal Corocher, who shared the process of writing her book Giovanni, which tells the story of her great-grandfather's journey from Italy to Australia.
