Level 5

Reading

This week in reading, we have been diving deeper into Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman, with a particular focus on making inferences from the text. Students have been analysing quotes to uncover the emotions and motivations of characters with their peers. We engaged in purposeful discussions, helping us to better understand the characters’ development throughout the text. We also incorporated thinking routines such as “See, Think, Wonder”, which encouraged students to think critically and ask questions about the text, further enhancing their understanding of the characters, setting and plot.

Writing

This week in writing, we continued developing our realistic fiction writing pieces. We revisited mentor texts such as The Good Egg by Jory John to gain inspiration and refine our ideas for our writing. As students began to structure their narratives, we paid close attention to how their plots unfold and how their characters develop within the introduction and body paragraphs.

Inquiry/Maths

In Inquiry and Maths, we continued our European holiday project by delving deeper into our planning. Students began working on budgeting for each day of their two-week holiday, taking into account costs for activities, food and accommodation. They have also started putting together detailed itineraries as they plan their daily adventures. This hands-on project has provided valuable lessons in financial planning and organisation, and we can’t wait to share their fantastic holiday plans and itineraries with our families!

Cross class connections

This week, our Year 5 students had the opportunity to collaborate with another class on some exciting cross-class activities. We began with a geography scavenger hunt, where students worked together to uncover clues about different countries. The excitement continued with an escape room challenge which integrated geography and numeracy skills. Students tackled various puzzles and clues to crack the code and reveal the mystery country. It was wonderful to see students from both classes working together as they solved problems and engaged in these interactive and educational activities!
