3 Great Things and Negativity Bias

During Peaceful Kids, we discuss the importance of finding 3 great things (or 3 good things) about their day.

Negativity Bias

Our brain is wired so that we focus on the negative things around us, rather than the positive things. This leads us to thinking about the possible negative outcomes of a situation, causing an increase in worry and stress.

We need far more positive things in our day to outweigh one negative thing so using mindfulness and focussing on the positive can help overcome our negativity bias!

Mindfulness, including meditation and mindful breathing, can help us become more positive and enthusiastic.

‘3 great things’

Focussing on 3 great things about our day can help train our mind to become more optimistic. This is a simple and quick activity to do with the family. A great way is to go around the dinner table and share 1 good thing that happened that day. It doesn’t have to be something huge that happened, just something ‘good’. It could be as simple as ‘the muffin in my lunch was so yummy,’ ‘I finished my writing piece’ or ‘I played my favourite game at lunch time.’ Joining in and sharing your best thing about the day is also a great way to model the activity and improve your optimism too!
