Celebrating Student Voice – What Matters? Writing Competition

We would like to acknowledge and congratulate our Year 5 and 6 students who chose to take part in the What Matters? Writing Competition, run by the Whitlam Institute.

The What Matters? Writing Competition is a national program open to students in Years 5 to 12, encouraging young people to think deeply about what is important to them and how they can contribute to society. Inspired by former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam’s belief in engaging young people in shaping Australia's future, the competition asks a simple but powerful question: What matters?

Entries can take the form of fiction, non-fiction, poetry or prose, up to 600 words. It is more than just a writing exercise; it's an opportunity for students to explore ideas, express opinions, and engage in real-world thinking about values, community, and change.

Participating in this competition gave our students the chance to improve their writing skills, think critically about the world around them, and have their voices heard.

We’re proud of each student who took the initiative to enter, and we encourage them to continue developing their ideas and writing with confidence and purpose. While our students were not among the winners this year, we are extremely proud of their thoughtful contributions and the effort they put into their writing.
